CakeandFineWine · 11/10/2009 21:41

I can't find a winter coat that I like anywhere.
Proviso's:
Under £50 they only ever last me 1 year.
Have a hood
Be warm
suitable for a size 14-16

Only found 2 I like and they were £80 & £120 and am fed up of looking......

Your budget is too low for anything nice.
John lewis have some lovely coats though. I bought a cashmere blend peacoat for £89.

NellieTheEllie · 11/10/2009 22:49

loads here

NellieTheEllie · 11/10/2009 22:51

and here

Squishabelle · 11/10/2009 22:56

at £50 being too low for anything nice. Surely there has to be some nice coats for this budget. Feeling a bit because my winter coat last year was nowhere near £50, it will last me throught this winter too and I thought it was nice.

LauraIngallsWilder · 11/10/2009 23:00

£50 is too low a budget for people that can afford to spend more money on a coat

£50 is fine for the rest of us

moondog · 11/10/2009 23:33

If I had a budget of £50, I'd go to a secnod hand/charity shop to get somethnig well made rather than something new and cheap.

cleaningsucks · 11/10/2009 23:35

moondog - that was a bit harsh/ dismissive of all of us who don't have any money.

moondog · 11/10/2009 23:37

What bit?
The 2nd hand bit or the not being able to find a nice coat for under £50 bit?

I'm sorry either way. Didn't mean to be rude. It's an absolute bummer to be hard up.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 11/10/2009 23:38

Nice!

I got a coat today from Regatta as am fed up of minging soaking wet wool coats that don't dry between school runs and have to be dry cleaned - I am too poor to learn to drive so have to walk in all weathers.

It is waterproof, windproof, feminine and cost £19.99 to boot.

Depends what you are looking for. Formal? Practical?

LauraIngallsWilder · 11/10/2009 23:43

Ladyoftheflowers - where did you get your regatta coat from

I am definitely after a practical coat

Cakeandfinewine - if a coat you lasts only 1 year regardless of whether you spend £50 or £120 - I agree absolutely spend less than £50

LadyOfTheFlowers · 11/10/2009 23:50

I got it today in a factory outlet of Regatta.
They might have it on their site or something? Will look.
Think it was about £39.99 full price, £19.99 outlet price.

Has a hood, which you can tighten right in round your face if it's raining like a turtle, draw whatsits to nip the waist in and zips right up over your lips to keep the wind off them if you like without restricting speech.

CaptainNancy · 11/10/2009 23:53

This one from Debenhams is only just above your budget and maybe someone has a code for debenhams?

Or there is this one but it doesn't look warm enough for deepest winter.

CaptainNancy · 11/10/2009 23:54

meant to say the first is on the snug side... I am a 10, but a 14 was most comfortable (allowing for a jumper)

LadyOfTheFlowers · 11/10/2009 23:58

This might work, but probably won't!
This is THE coat I bought today in the same colour - also came in a nice choc brown, but they didn't have my size....

TKmaxx or boohoo

poshsinglemum · 13/10/2009 21:36

I got a wonderful red coat from Primark one year. It wasn't more than £30 and it's wool. I still have it.

TeenyTinyToria · 13/10/2009 21:55

I have to say, regardless of the amount of money I had available to spend, I wouldn't pay more than a maximum of £30 for a coat. I still have a burgundy corduroy blazer I bought in Primark four years ago, for £1. It looks brand new!

Another vote for Asda here, they have great coats for £15 at the moment.

accessorizequeen · 13/10/2009 22:31

Debenhams have duffle coats in red and purple for £50. John Rocha I think, very nice. Someone on another thread was linking to an absolutely gorgeous purple one from tesco but don't know if it had a hood. If you want a coat rather than a jacket, more difficult to get something with a hood? Most coats don't have them. What have you found that you liked and couldn't afford?

cornsilk · 13/10/2009 22:38

Lands end will have coats in their sale and they're often vastly reduced.

CakeandFineWine · 13/10/2009 23:42

thanks all seen a couple on the Tesco website.
and some ideas for other places.....

OP posts:
Squishabelle · 14/10/2009 11:24

The Asda coats are a good price BUT they are not really coats - they are jackets - wouldnt keep the bum-cheeks warm!

CakeandFineWine · 14/10/2009 19:39

thanks all
Got an ace duffel coat in Tesco for £35!
And while I was there they reduced a really nice purple (but hoodless) tulip coat to £10 So I had that aswell
So moondog 2 nice coats for £45!

Cake - well done for showing it CAN be done for under £50. Guess where I will be off to tonight.
