it's a modern phenomenon, isn't it? It was all rucksacks and shoulder bags in my day

I found a black patent version like this in Oxfam a few weeks ago for £4.00.

You just have to carry it over your elbow. It sort of makes you do it

Bleh · 01/10/2009 16:13

Damnit. So close.

Bleh · 01/10/2009 16:14

So seriously, nobody thought of shortening their skirts above the knees until 1966/7?! For THOUSANDS of clothes wearing years, no one thought of this? Staggering.

pyjamalama · 01/10/2009 16:15

Shows how posh and how much help you have, surely? You can't carry anything else if you are carrying your handbag like that! (eg. kids bookbags, manky tesco carrier of old swimming kit, snacks for school run, DHs dry cleaning, emergency supermarket shopping for dinner tonight...)

mummee09v · 01/10/2009 16:16

LOL i do this too ....only with my Chloe one though (yeah yeah the FAKE chloe one before anyone jumps in )

xx

Bleh · 01/10/2009 16:17

See Coco Chanel carried her bag like that. Presumably while doing a merry jig.

Bleh · 01/10/2009 16:18

Like everything Posh does, she is hardly an original.

CybilLiberty · 01/10/2009 16:50

love that picture of coco chanel

booboo I geddit now!

I think it's all about showcasing said bag, in Posh's case anyway..

That photo is a bit of a 'seperated at birth' moment for me. I have jigged a bit in my time too.

Plus - if it is a structured bag, it is also about not snagging your tights. If you hold one of those by the handles they are at skirt hem level and i have caught mine before

Saltire · 01/10/2009 17:09

and of course the mobile phone has to be held in the other hand, at about elbow height so it is parallel with the bag

pagwatch · 01/10/2009 17:14

@ saltire

Its all a bit mirror, signal, manoever isn't it. I am amazed Posh manages really.

franklymydear · 01/10/2009 17:18

I think that looks really twatty and always have done

BlackCountryJo · 01/10/2009 17:18

Over my left shoulder always... I never dance around it!

CybilLiberty · 01/10/2009 17:19

I do feel twatty doing it, and sore with my gammy elbow

OP posts:
pagwatch · 01/10/2009 17:20

Pag does twatty jig.

Bleh · 01/10/2009 17:23

Maybe that is a photo of an early attempt at "bag dancing". It wasn't until 1982 at a nightclub in Wiggan that the bag dance, as we know it, was perfected when a group of girls in white stilletos put theirs on the floor and danced around them.

MmeLindt · 01/10/2009 17:24

I do too, but I go between feeling very up to date and completely silly.

HecatesTwopenceworth · 01/10/2009 17:31

Cor, I wish I could fit all my junk stuff into a tiny bag like that! I could really do with a bloody bin liner!

My huge bag has a long strap and I wear it across me, iyswim, so that it can't be easily snatched.

mummee09v · 01/10/2009 17:56

why do people think it looks twatty?? whats twatty about it??

i hold mine like that coz it doesnt feel right having it on my shoulder!

anyway seeing as i'm usually toting the kids, its usually hung off my buggy. which is a bugaboo gecko - a fashion accessory in its own right haha

xx

Amandoh · 01/10/2009 20:13

If the strap isn't long enough to put over your shoulder then it makes sense to carry it like that. If you hold it in your hand then it bangs against your legs as you walk.

wonderingwondering · 01/10/2009 20:20

Amandoh, that is right, lots of bags have sort of half-way length straps now, so they are too short to go over your shoulder, esp if the bag is full (of old tissues, wet wipes and sweet wrappers, of course) and the bag is too big/long strapped to carry in your hand.

I had the identical thought to the OP as I marched across the tube station today, carrying my bag over my elbow.

teafortwo · 01/10/2009 20:31

Oh My God!!! - I did that with my Monoprix bag today!!!

andirobobo · 01/10/2009 21:27

Confession - I too do holdmy bag like this, but usually when I have my keys in my hand and trying to unlock the car park gate!
