A black dress for a wedding guest....

Ok I need style advice and thought of the MN stylistas first!

I am going to a wedding, and I have found the most gorgeous black dress. It's a very classic long sleeved cross over dress quite 1940s in style and I want to wear it, even though black may be a wedding faux pas!

My question is, do I wear coloured accessories/bag - or what? And what colour if so? I guess I have to 'wedding' it up somehow but how to do this stylishly??? Heeeelp!

I had the same dilemma as you and came up with the following..

Can you wear, say, a different coloured jacket (white/red?) or bolero? Maybe a coloured belt? Once you get to the reception, and take your jacket off no one will really notice.

My sister in law wore a black dress with a white jacket to my wedding and I thought she looked fab!

hmm...I don't think a jacket would be that comfortable with it - but a coloured belt is a good idea......I am so clueless with colour, guess that's why I've gone for a black dress! What's best together - black and white, black and red, or maybe a dull/subtle metallic silver or gold?

oh and does one wear black shoes with a black dress or go for coloured shoes to match whatever colour you accessorise with?

Hmm... When is the wedding? If it is soon (i.e. autumn/winter-ish) I saw a dress in Coast that was black with a patent red belt and thought it looked fabulous, so I would be tempted to go in that direction, with possibly black patent shoes (red shoes always reminds me that at school we used to say "red socks, no knickers"

However, if it was spring/summer next year, I would probably go white/silver belt with silver strappy sandles!

It is spring next year - April (planning ahead!) Actually I am really liking the idea of white or silver with strappy sandals.....ta!

and I shall remember the 'red socks' thing, wouldn't want to be seen as the wrong type of girl!!!
