I want to thank whoever it was that mentioned this method in a thread a while back. I googled it and have started the no-poo method, it has absolutely transformed my hair. So thankyou, thankyou, thankyou whoever you were.

Are you detangling in the shower?

Steala · 25/09/2009 19:52

Yes. It's not tangled, just inconsistent - some bits are quite straight, others ringletty, others quite wavy. What a shame. I was so inspired by all the pictures!

BitOfFun · 25/09/2009 19:53

It does take a bit of time for your hair to re-moisturise, I think. It's a steady improvement though.

Lulumama · 25/09/2009 19:54

want to try this for DD, is it possible to have a quick recap of suitable products and the method please wtihouth trawling through a gazillion posts

BitOfFun · 25/09/2009 20:02

Have a final shampoo to remove silicone build-up.

Use a silicone-free shampoo like Inecto Coconut, or Original Source. Comb/detangle. Leave a bit in.

Apply a little clear gel if wanted, or Boots Pink Curl Cream.

Scrunch dry with as smooth a towel (microfibre) or a t-shirt to avoid frizz. Plop your curls into similar if desired while you get on with your morning.

Finish by air drying (it helps to clip up top canapy of curls to get air at the roots, with bulldog combs or similar), or diffuse and scrunch gently on a low heat/speed. Touch hair as little as possible, and never brush or comb when dry.

stirlingstar · 25/09/2009 21:00

Steala - that's how my hair tends to be, even on good day. Have only tried plopping so far (this am) and did make one side better - more consistently ringletty. I'm going to persevere. The bulldog clip thing sounds like might help, but don't think I'm ever realistically going to do that as have two small DCs and not one for long beauty routines anyway.

Lulumama · 25/09/2009 22:26

thank you... and then you never wash your hair with shampoo again??

BitOfFun · 25/09/2009 22:29

Correctamundo.

Did I really just type that out loud?

BitOfFun · 25/09/2009 22:31

Shit- I said shampoo:

Use a silicone-free shampoo like Inecto Coconut, or Original Source. Comb/detangle. Leave a bit in.

I mean conditioner

Lulumama · 25/09/2009 22:37

that's v v helpful, thanks xx have stopped washing dd's hair every day and that in itself helps

AvrilH · 27/09/2009 13:15

Ooooh, can I join you ladies?

Any advice on shampoo for a low-poo approach? Is original source or baby shampoo best? Since having DD my hair has gone very greasy, and I've been washing it every day. I don't think I can go for the poo-free, co-washing straight away, will have to wean myself gradually.

Montifer · 27/09/2009 22:52

Have been reading with interest and am nearly ready to give it a go.

How often do you no poo-ers 'wash' your hair?

If not everyday how do you perk up between washes?
I would really prefer not to have wash hair every morning, but it is always very squashed and frizzy after being slept on.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 28/09/2009 07:49

I have done two co washes/plops so far and it is like I have new hair, I can't believe how much curl I have already and hopefully it will keep getting better.

Montifer I have to wash mine every couple of days as it needs doing after my yoga class.

I have been washing at night so I can sleep with it 'plopped' and not squash it. The mornings in between I just re-shape it with wet fingers and it looks fine.

AvrilH Don't think you can use original source shampoo only conditioner, the shampoo must be SLS free, there is a link further back on the thread to usable products with low-poo shampoos on.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 28/09/2009 07:51

Here Suitable UK products.

quirkychick · 28/09/2009 10:33

This is a fab thread!

My hair had frizz ease overuse . I have co-washed twice, already better "feel" to hair and curlier! I did know about only washing with conditioner but not about sulfates/silicones which is why I always resorted to shampoo again due to build up.

I am using Original Source conditioner £1/99p from Poundland/Savers

Inecto Coconut conditioner £1.49 from Savers

Boots pink curl cream £1.49

Plopping with old t-shirts

Thanks WheretheWildThingsWere I might have to low poo sometime, especially as I get it coloured regularly, I don't think conditioner will shift the dye. Fortunately, my hairdresser comes to my house so she uses whatever shampoo/conditioner I provide so I will get some in.

stirlingstar · 28/09/2009 14:01

Hmmm I'm on day three - first day of no poo at all - and look is going downhill. Does is really get better as go along? Hair is a bit curlier but fuzzy and rats taily. And was wet till lunchtime - dried faster before I did the plopping and was just air drying.

Am using original source pear and a bit of pink curl creme.

any advice?

Does anyone here go to work? I'm trying this tonight and had to wash my hair at about 16:00 - it's still damp (and looks crap. Maybe I haven't got curly hair, just naturally frizzy, wavy hair). I couldn't possibly sleep on it and take the chance that it'd look ok for work judging by my first attempt.

said · 28/09/2009 18:57

What about parabens as well - I though they were hair baddies (or are they just body baddies, if that makes sense)? If you look at stuff without silicone or sulphates it still seems to have parabens

SardineQueen · 28/09/2009 23:31

Have had my first go! (lovelytinofspam here BTW, was on a bit earlier)

Used aussie miracle moist shampoo which smelt lush and was lovely. Then washed with original source avocado one, then rinsed and put on a little original source avocado and left on, which was an accident as I had the original source pepermint for that but got confused

brushed with denhmam d whatever brush.

tried to plop but tshirt wasn't big enough and couldn't work out how to do it, so put it up in a towel as per usual for a bit then let it air dry.

now I have the same prob as steala. mad curly underneath, with wavy and straggly bits on top and dotted around. overall effect is witchy.

having said that it usually looks pretty witchy anyway and DH says it smells nice, so we'll take that as a positive start? yes?

BTW the original source ones have loads of parabens in, do we have a poncey choice for co-washing which is less chemically?

blithedance · 28/09/2009 23:44

Faith in nature conditioners are paraben free. They are about £7 a bottle from health food shops or online

Having said that I've been using the FiN Lavender Geranium conditioner and still have the itchy dry scalp and dry hair, I don't think it's possibly thick enough.

I got my Original Source from the pound shop today as well as a spritzing bottle and some of those bendy curl sticks like we had in the 80's - maybe they will sort out my "flat top".

SardineQueen · 28/09/2009 23:54

Thanks blithe .

BTW when you say you have a flat top i assume you don't mean like this?

sleepsforwimps · 29/09/2009 08:26

Are you all plopping overnight/for a long time? I'm only a brief plopper, just plop while I get dressed etc than diffuse hair dry as usual. I know my hair would hate prolonged plopping.

OP posts:
SardineQueen · 29/09/2009 10:18

I have just got out of bes and my hair looks like worzel gummage.

Am I allowed to brush it/go through with fingers/what do I do?

stirlingstar · 29/09/2009 13:54

I watched some YouTube that said to plop for a long time/overnight, so tried that, but today went back to brief plop then air dry. Am rubbish with hair dryer technique! Hair still curlier and messier but possibly bt beter today. Has been a bit itchy while drying but feels ok once dry. Am going to keep trying for a week or so.

How do you know if you need to shampoo?

stirlingstar · 29/09/2009 13:56

sardine I've had to go through with fingers a bit - try going up rather than down through curls?
