The Curly Girl Method

I want to thank whoever it was that mentioned this method in a thread a while back. I googled it and have started the no-poo method, it has absolutely transformed my hair. So thankyou, thankyou, thankyou whoever you were.

yes you should - all reports seem good and personnally it's the best thing I've ever done with my hair, wish I'd known about it/had the guts to embrace my curls years ago.

I reckon it might take a few days to a week, depending on the state of her hair etc. If it looks odd with her cut don't despair. Once my curls started to establish properly I just hacked bits off here and there over a couple of days until I got the vague shape I wanted (curly hair VERY forgiving of that approach I find) - I even met my hairdresser in a bar one night and admitted this to him and he said that no-one would ever know and it looked great.

Go on, work on her!

bintofbohemia · 21/12/2009 16:18

Hello - I've just stopped using shampoo a week ago and have just bought the nettle and marshammlow shampoo bar here. It's early days but there's pretty much nothing dodgy in it at all, should it work, do you think?

peanutbrittle · 22/12/2009 08:16

that shampoo bar sounds gorgeous - I don't think there is anything in there to worry about - how often do you plan to use it? let us know how it goes, I might order one myself if you rate it - sounds wonderful

Fruitbatlings · 23/12/2009 08:10

Hello all!

I really need your help. I used to (as a child) have loads of curls/ringlets (which I hated), now at 30 years old I have very wavy, fly-away hair.

I only comb it when it's been washed (while wet) and in between washes I run my fingers through it over the bath every evening

It gets very greasy at the roots after two days but is very dry at the ends.

I really want to take advantage of my curls/waves and have decided to have a go at the Curly Girl method.
Now, I really can't scan through 12 pages of discussions so would somebody please explain it to me? I sort of get it, having looked at other websites. I'm a little concerned about washing my hair with conditioner as I have such oily roots
Or maybe it isn't oil, just a build up of shampoo?

How do I begin? It needs a wash but will wait until tomorrow morning and can hopefully get out today to buy what I need if you lot can give me some helpful tips?

thanks lovely ladies

Fruitbatlings · 23/12/2009 17:25

Oh dear, thread killer strikes again.

Don't worry, I'll have a look though the thread when I get some time. I'm sure you're all very busy at the moment - as I should be

Fruitbatlings · 23/12/2009 20:51

Ok, I've done it. Hmmmm, not sure all these curls really suit me, still damp though......however, my hair smells divine!

BitOfFunWithRudolph · 23/12/2009 21:13

Right- you need to wash your hair in a silicone-free conditioner, not a shampoo. Leave a tiny bit in when it's rinsed. Add a tiny bit of Boots pink curl creme after rubbing it between your palms so it goes white. A blob of clear gel, shake out the curls, wrap head in a cotton teeshirt for ten mins so that towel fibres don't frizz it up, then leave to dry naturally or diffuse it dry, handling as little as possible. Only comb through while wet with the conditioner, never dry. HTH

Fruitbatlings · 23/12/2009 21:39

thanks BOF, I've done it. I read through the thread in the end

Still waiting for it to dry.

Montifer · 23/12/2009 22:00

How are the curls looking Fruitbatlings?

What divine smelling conditioner did you use?

Am moving towards some no-pooing myself, when my expensive shampoo which I'm too mean to throw away runs out

Have got some OS tea tree conditioner and UG scrunching gel at the ready.

Fruitbatlings · 24/12/2009 07:11

I used the Aussie Miracle Moist shampoo and
Original Source White Pear and Avocado conditioner

This morning, the curls look a bit like they need a boost and a de-tangle.....

Fruitbatlings · 24/12/2009 07:12

I didn't use any other product as my hair is quite thin and lank so I didn't want to weigh it down anymore

bintofbohemia · 24/12/2009 11:05

I'm wondering if my frizz is terminal - I've used the Aussie stuff for yonks and it still gave me the frizzies.

I have noticed a slight improvement since using my shampoo bar, but tis still frizzy. Do I just have to wait? (It's been about 10 days since I used shampoo!)

TinselianAstra · 24/12/2009 11:32

I am now a cone-free zone. For now. Not sure if anything is happening though.

Smalline · 26/12/2009 10:24

Hi bintofbohemia I'm not sure if I can help you but I was just wondering how are you doing your hair? I used to have lots of frizz but I found the less I handle my hair the more curls I have, the days that I don't wash my hair (I only wash twice a week) I wet my hair in the shower every morning, squeeze out the excess water in towel (I don't rub with the towel),I put some pink gel in then scrunch with my fingers and leave to dry, the result short shiny ringlets.

bintofbohemia · 06/01/2010 10:02

Hello! Just resurrecting - have finally bought the pink curl creme from boots which seems to be REALLY good. My hair is only wavy, (I'd say 2a from that website!) and have just been using the shampoo bar and not conditioning so not been following to the letter.

I did go several years without washing my hair (used to have dreads) and it was never greasy or minging - sometimes I yearn for those days again, no bad hair days...

Poppity · 14/01/2010 17:04

I'm about to give this a go, I'm starting with Aussie miracle moist and then Dr Organics aloe vera conditioner and Boots pink creme.

Have old t-shirt plopping turban at the ready.

I henna my hair though, anyone else colour theirs in any way? Is it still ok?

sleepsforwimps · 14/01/2010 23:03

Reporting back with a barnet update, It's now been four months since I started co-washing, plopping etc. I had a little period of itchy scalp, loss of curl, but this was due to changing to Garnier repair and shine which my hair hated! Back to Original Source and my hair's much improved again, I don't think I'd ever go back to using shampoo reguarly. (I have done the odd shampoo wash with Aussie miracle moist when I think my hair has needed it.)

What results has everyone else had?

OP posts:
Poppity · 14/01/2010 23:24

which original source do you use?

Montifer · 15/01/2010 00:01

I'm about 5 co washes into CG method and my curls haven't been this soft and frizz free for years.

Have been using OS tea tree and mint and a bit of Umberto Wotsit's scrunching gel for styling purposes, as needed.

Am a true convert, thanks all.

Usually swim 3-4 x week but haven't been(as too nesh) since the ice age set in, hopefully chlorine won't interfere with CG success.

sleepsforwimps · 15/01/2010 07:55

I use OS pear & avocado for washing, then mint and tea tree for conditioning. I also use Umberto wotsits scrunching gel

OP posts:
Montifer · 30/01/2010 22:08

All still going well with the co washing.
Still haven't got back to swimming

My hair sometimes seems a little dry which I didn't expect, I'm washing and conditioning with OS mint and tea tree (the pear and avo is a bit sweet smelling for me).

Please can anyone suggest a good conditioning conditioner IYKWIM?

hoxtonchick · 31/01/2010 08:49

my hair looks so much better since doing modified cg. i am too wimply to co-wash, so use shampoo with no sls. currently loving aubrey organics stuff - white cammelia shampoo, honeysuckle rose conditioner. then i use their mandarin gel with ojon hair tamer. scrunch with a curl towel. i'm a new woman .

Montifer · 31/01/2010 09:32

Sounds delicious, thanks, will have a look at Aubrey

Montifer · 01/02/2010 12:03

Have just seen that Sainsburys have 1/2 price hair stuff offer so maybe I'll save the posh mandarin stuff for when I'm feeling less of a skinflint

Any recommendations for supermarket shelf conditioners which make the CG grade?

Pinkmarshmallow · 02/03/2010 12:12

Hello curly girls, how are we all doing? I'm still at early stages of this, having been trying to finish up old products before going cone-free. Got Asda's natural extracts coconut milk & tiare flower condtioner for co-washing, but notice it has methylisothiazolinone... is this ok? THought this as meant to be a CG-friendly product?
THe other thing I'm having probs with is fly-away bits at the top corners of my forehead...looks like horns! How do I cure that? I use a microfibre hair towel and the "horns" are not as bad as when I used a cotton t-shirt, but still unsightly....any tips for me? Also, are there any dry shampoos we can use? I see people recommending Batiste on another thread here...is it ok? Tia.
