yes here it is, our house.
it's rather plain as you can see....

i would like to add a bit of life and colour to it.

the walls need something

esp the wall above the table

i dont know how to do the living room as it;s a funny shape and has the stairs in it

one colour i would like to use is green.
and i was thinking either lime green and cerise, although i might get sick with cerise

or greens and browns

i'vename changed as i don't really fancy people knowing me in rl, although they might recognise my house.
so if you know me out don't out me.
thanks

but the less we spend the batter iyswim

I like the green/ cerise idea.

A big wall canvas few cushions and perhaps a rug are all that's needed I think

Could you move the tv somewhere else? Be better j think?

WhatCanIDoWithMyHouse · 13/09/2009 11:02

chairs i like these but we would have to change the table to a clear/glass one.

but i don.t know if there too modern for our house iyswim

but if the table and chair where sort of transparent we would get a better view of the garden from the living room

don't think you can see that well from my pics but between the living room and kitch there are two french doors
so we have them open mostly
so you could get a better view of outside

Try this website too, loads of lovely work on there but hesitant to suggest anything in particular as art is so personal

HecatesTwopenceworth · 13/09/2009 11:05

It's nice. Because it's so plain you can go MAD with some huge pictures! I think keep the walls etc as they are and buy some outrageously colourful and gigantic pictures!

WhatCanIDoWithMyHouse · 13/09/2009 11:06

the tv could be moved yes.
it s a bloody eye sore that thing but dh loves it for sport and movies.

ewe thanks ever so much for posting that link for me.
it's very nice of you.

i will have a good look

it would be good if we just left the walls and floors and just added a rug and pictures etc
as it will be less work for me, as i do the diy in the house.

mmrsceptic · 13/09/2009 11:14

it's great, you don't need anything except pictures

if you can't afford them, buy some v large canvases and do some abstract nonsense yourself or ask the children to do it

they'll look great, I promise

joliejolie · 13/09/2009 11:15

I think it is perfect just the way it is!

WhatCanIDoWithMyHouse · 13/09/2009 11:26

heres something i quite like i noicted a while ago

maybe for above the table?
also i thinking for a possiblity for above tthe table a really nice photo blow up, i took at a uk seadside place with the sea beach and sanddunes
but dh thinks it would look odd in a kitchen and beach photos/pics are for bathrooms
what do you think to a beach/dune photo in a kitchen diner?

WhatCanIDoWithMyHouse · 13/09/2009 11:30

paint the sides of the block canvas too, makes them look real

frumpygrumpyisacoffeeRevel · 13/09/2009 11:35

Great canvas to work on!

It is crying out for colour. I'd go for a gorgeous wallpaper, it could take a dramatic one, big print. Be brave. Then a really soft rug to sit in front of/between the couches and two large lamps on either side of the couches.

In the kitchen, the dining wall only, big dramatic print wallpaper or massive print/artwork. Other walls painted to tone.

You clearly don't keep clutter and so a dramatic paper won't be too much.

LaurieFairyCake · 13/09/2009 11:36

Hmm....I might put the tv on the wall where the radiator is and have inbuilt storage under the stairs for the tv-related-boxes (dvd,freeview/sky etc) and all the dvd's/cd's.

And then a big fabulous green print rug in the middle and nice snuggly green throws and cushions

nice rug plucked out the air They have some lovely rugs on the johnlewis site.

stack of cushions to match

nice green and pink throw to match

In the kitchen I would do blackboard paint on that wall and start attaching family photos/postcards and some nice art work.

Your house is beautifully tidy and I'm a bit more of a maximilist clutterbug but I think it would be even nicer with a bit of softening round the edges.

frumpygrumpyisacoffeeRevel · 13/09/2009 11:37

One of my favourite bits of art is a big framed poster of an art exhibition I went to in 1999. It is gorgeous. Framing cost about £80 and the poster cost about £5.

frumpygrumpyisacoffeeRevel · 13/09/2009 11:39

IKEA do black or cream magnet boards (£6). I have three running together in my utility room, right along one wall, horizontally. Its fab for kids pictures, photos, tickets and it changes all the time. I am slightly anal and I tidy mine Its collage art!!!!

macherie · 13/09/2009 11:43

This is a good place for inspiration.

Wovenground has a good selection of rugs.

Wallmounting your tv would get it out of the way.

Ithink a beach photo would look great in your kitchen - there are no rules about whare you can put what, do what you like

frumpygrumpyisacoffeeRevel · 13/09/2009 11:43

something like this in your living room Pricey but worth it. You could just do one wall to save money.

frumpygrumpyisacoffeeRevel · 13/09/2009 11:45

DAMN! It screwed up my link! That wasn't the one I'd chosen!!!!!

Look in ContemporaryII, its called Fioretti, its the first one, code 69/1101.

OllieWollieWoo · 13/09/2009 12:08

for the wall behind the table in the kitchen, you could try doing a a square of photos frames (eg lots that are arranged in one big square) - I like the chinky Ribba ones from Ikea in light wood or white and use different sizes). I've also seen this idea used to display kids art work (eg in the frames)which looked good! You could also paint a square of blackboard paint or just cover a large canvas with some nice material such as something with a big flower print on from Ikea or Laura Ashley??? I liked your house btw!

WhatCanIDoWithMyHouse · 13/09/2009 12:20

wow thanks for all the links and comments, i'm making my way through them

you've made me feel a bit more positive about the house, suppose it is a good blank canvas to start from.
the walls floors and kitchen are ok and at least they will fit with most things

i think i'm just having difficulties on where to start, esp as it is so plain at the mo, and picking things that go.
and also i don't really have a style as such

i'm not sure i could wall mount that or even get someone to do it as i would be terrified it might crash onto my toddler.

perhaps if i actually choose one or two key bits the rest will fall into place

moondog · 13/09/2009 12:38

Do not fall into trap of thinking only beach stuff for bathrooms. You are then only a short and terrible step away from putting your loo rolls in jaunty nautical holder and towels on shelves shaped like half an upturned boat.

Nasty.

MrsWeasley · 13/09/2009 12:40

My friends living room is exactly the same as yours except she has a little more clutter in hers!
She has broken up the white/cream with some curtains, throws and cushions and a large rug. She didnt spend a lot of money on them because she likes to change the colours themes around a bit. She has a warm colour theme for the winter(with red, orange, brown) it gives a really cosy feeling. In the summer she had greens and pinks (i think) for a bright summery feel.
She doesnt do a lot for each change just a change of curtains and covers every now and again.

Hope that helps!

CybilLiberty · 13/09/2009 12:44

I think I would be inclined to move one fo the sofas so they are not just asitting at right angles to each other. I take it that's so both can see the telly?

Having them facing each other, maybe with a low table inbetween would cosy up the space.

Have a look in the IKEA catalogue. They seem to cram loads of stuff into rooms much smaller than yours and they really work as a functional space.

NoahAmin · 13/09/2009 13:48
