I can't get the backs off my dd's earrings - help!

My dd got her ears pierced about 8 weeks ago now. I tried to take the backs off to get them out to change the earrings, but they are very tight and the more I pulled and twisted the more I was hurting her. Also the ones she has in are little stars and each time I tried to get the backs off because of the way I was holding her ear the points of the star were digging into her ear lobes and making her cry. The back of one of her ears also bled a little bit.

How on earth do I get them off?

do you have the solution to clean them with? I''m assuming you had them done at claires?

Winetimeisfinetime · 02/09/2009 22:57

Hopefully they are out now, but if not I would hold the front of the earring { the star } whilst trying to pull off the back. Some earring posts have a nobbly bit that is supposed to stop the backs from falling off but also makes it hard to get them off.

Or you could try Vaseline or putting a warm flannel over the area in the hopes the metal expands and contracts and helps the backs off.

We had the same problem with DD a few weeks back, although not stars. As wtift says hold the front of the earring, if you can get your nail behind it so its not being pulled through the ear, then try and screw the back off.

Oh thanks all. Will have a go with vaseline/flannel and screwing it off.

I DID NOT have them done at Claire's. It was a very upmarket spa place!

Lol - I cringe when I see children sitting in the chair in Claire's.

I used to work there a long time ago. Hated doing the piercings.

ruddynorah · 02/09/2009 23:42

i used to work there too. worst bit was people coming back after the 6-8 wks to get the piercing earrings taken out. hated trying to get them off. hated cleaning their ears if they hadn't been doing it properly bleurgh.

maybe ask the spa place if they do follow up appointmnets too?

we had this with Claire's earrings, and I had to slightly untwist the curled bit on the back, as it wasn't loose enough. Fortunately I had proper jewellery making pliers, as you need something with very narrow points.

NoGoodNicknamesLeft · 03/09/2009 08:36

re: points of stars, cut out a disc of paper, with a radial cut to the centre, slip behind the earring front and the ear and the star points shouldn't dig in.

I agree with wats: leave 'em in for longer. Also make sure she's twisting them in the holes so they don't stick.

When I first got my ears pierced, there was a fair amount of seepage (sorrry, tmi) and the backs got all crusted over (overnight! I did clean!). A good soak and sterile drops sorted it out.

ruddynorah · 03/09/2009 09:21

dare i say it's fairly poor form for the spa to have done a piercing with anything but a round stud? stars with points are going to be more prone to dig in and get infected.

the piercing earrings usually have a lip on them so the back can't just fall off nor get too near the ear that the stud would dig in and become embedded. so it won't just slide off, you have to pull hard to get the back off over the lip IYSWIM.

Oh ok will leave them for longer. The stars are not hugely pointy, just slightly tipped if that makes sense, they really are weeny things and you wouldn't know they are stars unless you have a good look at them.

It's the sitting in the window of Claire's for all in sundry to see that gets me, especially when you hear little babies screaming, although I realise that due to the sizing of these shops there is no other option.
