Decided to splash out on a moisturiser as just turned 40, is Clarins the best?

I've always bought No7 skincare products and considered this to be at the high end of the market for my financial circumstances. But having accrued a bit of Birthday money recently and finding out that most of my 40-something pals use Clarins, Lancome or the like and all look fab, have decided to bite the bullet and go to the "posh" beauty counters for some retail therapy. Help! They always seem a tad intimidating! The general consensus seems to be that Clarins' day cream is the best. My skin is combination (I think!)

I personally think Clarins things are way too perfumed. Liz Earle Superskin Moisturiser seems to work well for me.

anyone suggest a cruelty free one?

I don't like clarin's either. My mum bought me some for my birthday a few years ago and it was way too perfumed and kills if it gets in your eyes.

I read the Which report and was very surprised to find the simple range so highly thought of- specially as it's so cheap!

Am bit gutted about Roc as I've just bought the cream-not cheap at £25!!! But then again nothing has really worked on my skin and this seems to be controlling it a little more than the others I have tried (Clarins, Olay regenerist and all the rest) which maybe because of the retinol. Though as there's only a small amount it's probably not doing much anyway.

I had simple eye make up remover as it wasn't the oil type, but had to give it up as it made my eyes sting and water so much. So I wouldn't want to use their face creams in case of a reaction.
Not sure why this happened as simple stuff is not perfumed, not coloured and supposed to be kind

I love Simple products, but have also started using Olay Complete Care Everyday Sunshine which is AMAZING! My skin has never looked better - no spots or break outs - and the hint of colour looks great, and less need for make up (although it is an excellent base for the small amount of concealer and powder I am using).

I have been using Aromatherapy Associates "Renew" facial oil. Contains rose, sandalwood & patchouli. Absolutely gorgeous and better than any other moisturiser I have ever used. You only need the tiniest amount and it works wonders, leaving your skin glowing

My personal feeling is that moisturisers are much of a muchness and you should shell out for a retinol night product.

Also use sunscreen obsessively every day.

Exfoliating will also make a huge difference, as will self-tan for the face if you are pale.

a vote here for Neal's Yard - cruelty free, mostly organic, lovely lovely textures and scents and packaging.

I like the frankincense cream and the rose balm - the balm is a little pricy but fantastic.

I also agree with scattergun - sunscreen & gentle exfoliation (and enough sleep) make all the difference.

Just bought a pot of Ponds Hydro-moist (about £3.50) and am very impressed so far. Lovely texture and doesn't make my face sting like Olay Total Effects.

Thirding pro-collagen marine cream. It's fab.

Try to read Daily Mail Femail online- last THursday's edition- they did a survey and found that the cheapest ones worked best- included Nivea, Olay and Simple.

Persoanlly, I have always used Clinique and love REN too- but the biggest and most important thing is to use a good sun screen 365 days year- something with SPF 25 ish. as it's the sun even on cloudy days that causes wrinkles and sagging.
