Has Gap shut anywhere else? Is this recession thing or summat else?

Our Gap closed last weekend. It had been running low for a while - piles and racks of really low quality, mass produced and frankly, weird shaped stuff...like kind of shifts that didn't look or feel right, and strange thin t shirts.

I wasn't really shopping there since they started doing that as there was nothing worth buying - only the kids' stuff looked Ok still - but I wondered if they are closing in general or just ours?

It's a shame as they used to be brilliant.

They are in trouble I know that. But where I am (West London/SW London) they are still going strong. But the kids' collections are nowhere nearly as good as they used to be.

Fimbo · 13/08/2009 12:43

Ours is small and truly pants. Has had the most gruesome stuff for quite a while. I live in the UK's 5th best shopping city (apparently!) and we have never had GapKids, have to travel to Cambridge.

Fimbo · 13/08/2009 12:44

And I still miss Gymboree.

lankyesme · 13/08/2009 12:49

Gap in Canterbury closing.

EyeballsintheSky · 13/08/2009 12:52

Sod it, I'd better get shopping then. I have about £100 of vouchers for Baby Gap given as pressies when dd was born.

As an aside, does anyone know if I could use Baby Gap vouchers in Gap Kids? Not sure what size BG goes up to.

joliejolie · 13/08/2009 16:12

Cheltenham Gap is still open.
I think the t-shirts are so thin and I always get tiny holes in the front where my (non-sharped edged) belt is. I think the new style tops are crap quality, but so cheap.

joliejolie · 13/08/2009 16:14

Was going to say, The Cheltenham store was only closed because the roof collapsed and someone was hurt last week.
Big chaos in town that day!

MaybeAfterBreakfast · 13/08/2009 16:21

some Gap stuff is online now at asos

gibba8 · 13/08/2009 19:53

Indith and Scattyspice
The one at the metro centre has been gone since before xmas!
There is a new Gap store at Royal Quays now. I was there there the other day and the kids section had some nice stuff in. There is a store at Dalton Park also.

petalpower · 14/08/2009 14:47

Our local Gap used to be on two floors but is now only one. Not a great selection anymore especially in kids.

GrimmaTheNome · 14/08/2009 14:52

The Gap in Preston closed a few years ago.

Pinkjenny · 14/08/2009 15:05

I love Gap Kids, and have bought a few gems for myself in the last few years there. I wish it was all online though.

Skimummy · 14/08/2009 16:52

Oh, I have the slender chinos as well faustina and they are the best! In fact, have just got back from buying them in another colour. I thought anything with the word 'slender' in the description would not be for me at all but they are really flattering and soooo comfy! They have some good things at the moment...maybe turning a corner as it has been a while since I bought anything for me in there. Baby Gap is a whole other story!

geordieminx · 14/08/2009 16:54

Gap has been gone from the Metro for years, still a few in Glasgow

OrmIrian · 14/08/2009 16:55

Hope not. They are one of the few stores to have long enough jeans. We have a discount Gap and atm it is still very well stocked.

MaggieBeauLeo · 14/08/2009 20:03

I never shop in Gap, but Principles in Ireland has just shut down totally, every branch. I'm gutted. I loved that shop. I coudn't come out of it without buying something.
What's left!? jsut shops for younger women, or really expensive stuff. I mean, I lvoe ted baker and max mara weekend, betty barclay and even a bit of tommy! but so expensive.

MaggieBeauLeo · 14/08/2009 20:05

Gap jeans really boring. NO design on the pocket. You can get the same pair of jeans in uniqlo for half the price.

brokenspacebar · 14/08/2009 20:11

Maggie, Debenhams might still be selling Principles, iirc they bought the stock when it went under, worth a look anyway.

Gap is gone from Inverness, it was not a great shop, but I miss it for variety, they replaced it with a peacocks...

MaggieBeauLeo · 14/08/2009 20:16

Ah really? thanks, I'll have a look in blackrock.

OrmIrian · 14/08/2009 20:42

Yes but uniqlo are designed for teeny weeny little Japanese people! Their lonerg leg is about 31". No good for giraffes.

BikeRunSki · 14/08/2009 22:37

Sheffield city centre one closed end of last year. Huddersfield one came and went in no time, about 5 years ago.

I really like their knickers!

Gap in Metro Centre? Cool - when I lived in NuT, there was no. One did open in Eldon Square, but didn't last long.

kif · 14/08/2009 22:47

eyeballs - yes, the viuchers are valid in GK.

Buy their plain white socks - the bees knees.

Everything else: wait for sale!

MirandaBailey · 14/08/2009 23:02

Flight - if you're talking about the Gap store in a cathedral city in SE Kent that closed down last week, it's a local thing rather than Gap itself. The Dean & Chapter, who own the site, are utterly greedy bastards who doubled the rent when the lease came to an end, with no regard for the fact that the high street is dying on it's arse - and the Gap told them to shove it. Quite rightly.

nancy75 · 14/08/2009 23:10

for many years gap never used any kind of security/tagging systems in their stores (not sure if this is the case now as i never go in there) a friend of mine managed one of their stores some years ago and they closed it because the levels of stock loss made it unprofitable to stay open.

Manticore · 28/08/2009 22:04

Gap Inc made about 1 billion dollars in profits last year so I don't think there's much danger of them going bust yet!
