Help, please...going out first time in YEARS and need shoe help

I've been invited to a 30th party and my children are allowed to come.

I'm worried about what to wear. Got a quite nice frock a while ago, but it's sleeveless and I have a naff old tattoo - so can I wear a cardi with it? Also NO idea about shoes as I wear sandals mainly, I mean big chunky practical sandals and they will look rubbish with a posh frock

I can't do heels not with ds2 running amok

any ideas? Dress is one of two, actually - kimono type in dipped blue and white pattern from monsoon outlet ages ago, or ted baker golden thing, knee length, kind of shifty shape with bow at front and V neckline.

Any help appreciated!!!

this
is frock #2, only in bright golden colour without the print, iyswim. The monsoon one has got longer sleeves thankfully. But what kind of shoes...will flats be Ok, and if so what style? I am so befuddled!

Ooh, I like the Ted Baker dress!

Ballet pumps? In particular, animal print (good quality) ballet pumps. I have a nice goldy/black pair of leopard print ones that are a little more substantial than usual from River Island. You'd have to work that 'look' though.

Mid heels are back in vogue. Go to New Look for ideas, they are always hip and cheap.

I wasn't sure about pumps btw. Have got quite skinny calves, thighs a bit less so...bt I always feel a bit too 'short' in pumps. I'm 5ft7ish but I feel odd in them.

I think I need a little bit of a heel of sorts, or a thicker sole iyswim...oh dear. Why can't i just wear my wellies? I am happy in wellies.

Ok in my opinion......the blue dress is lovely but too "weddingy" for a birthday party.

The Ted Baker dress is so much better! Stylish and pretty. Definitely that one.

The shoes are not good with either - sorry

I'll go look for some that would suit the gold dress!

Nooooooo, sorry lovely, the shoes you have are way too chunky (may I just say how much I adore your mirror, though? )

I reckon that glads would look nice with the Ted Baker dress. Maybe something like this or maybe even these if you can't do ballet flats.

he Monsoon dress is harder as it is a funny length which kinda screams for heels IYSWIM. Erm, maybe some white wedges?

I like SilentBob's suggestion of gladiators......if you've got decent ankles.

These are nice and bargaintastic!

Basic ballet flat but nice!

more flip-floppy

Oh dear, I know it's bad, see I told you I needed help!!!

I quite like the knotted ones but I would feel so, sort of naked in them...iyswim

I need coverage

I am too old for all this bare flesh

I would consider a wedge

yes I think that is the way to go. Thankyou for being so helpful btw.

Would these be too mumsy? With the blue frock I mean.

It is a bit of an odd length isn't it - never tried it on till today, it was a bargain and so pretty...looks odd though!

flat but quite smart

Very gold!

Pretty

Great reduction on these!

Hmm the bow ones are quite nice, from Office.

I am thinking I might wear something like that but with dark jeans actually. I think the whole frock idea is failing somewhat...trouble being my dark jeans are about 5 years old with diamante 'honey' written on the back... never yet worn...

Lots of white wedges here - just ignore the pink ones they've included!

Ooh thankyou! Why is it that all the ones I like are apparently M&S? Or Hush Puppies??

Am I getting OLD?

would go well with either dress www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId= 19551&storeId=12556&categoryId=175031&parentcategoryrn=175012&productId=1313603&langId=-1

Blinks, thanks but can't get link to work? They have some nice studded pumps though.

I am despairing really of feeling right in anything, I think I'll have to save the dresses for winter and wear them with tights and boots...going with jeans to this one!!

definately need a heel with both those dresses.

these would inject some colour into the coutfit but look comfy and non-flimsy. very 1940s shape.
