Dying my own hair - should i?

i have about an inch of growth from last time i had my hair dyed. i menat to book a hairdressers appointment to get it done but forgot, i have a wedding party to go to on friday night and no time for an appointment, do i just dye my hair myself?

currently i have a reddy colour all over my normally dark brown hair, i was thinking of putting a chocolate brown through it all, will it be ok or am i going to end up look more stupid?

If you do an all over colour, get one that matches your own colour or the dyed colour (whichever is darker) well, or you will probably still see roots (although they may be less obvious) - some kind of streaks or highlights (that also match one or other colour) will probably mask the roots better, but if it doesn't work, just wear your hair up! I wouldn't try to just get one of those root colour things as the liklihood of it being exactly the same as what your hairdresser did are quite small (I think)

I have done it loads and never had a problem just go for it. Mind your carpet and put vaseline on your ears and forehead to stop staining.

was going to go darker than current colour, main concern is ending up with blue hair but guess thats unlikely going from reddy brown to dark chocolate brown.

I always used to dye my own hair but have somehow lost the nerve!

I have never had a professional colour, always do it myself. Never had a problem.

I was always a brand tart and never found any particular one of the well known brands any better or worse than the others.

I'll second what Thandeka said about the vaseline, otherwise you might end up with it on your neck, like I have today!

On the upside though, hair looks fab!

Katz · 21/07/2009 21:12

oops! wandering, will def do the vaseline thing, which would did you use today? was it runny, was thinking about using the garnier oen that davina advertsies that looks nice and thick and no gloopy/runny.

I used the Clairol perfect 10. It only takes 10 minutes once you've applied it. I've never really dyed my hair myself before. Once a few years ago and can't remember what I used.

Do a strand test first to check how the colour looks before you do it.

serinBrightside · 21/07/2009 22:19

Do a strand test to make sure you are not allergic to it.

MagNacarta · 21/07/2009 22:22

I did mine for the first time in many years recently and was quite nervous. I opted for a semi permenant just in case Casting Creme Gloss and it was fab. Go for it.

I dye my mousey brown hair a titian colour. 108 loving care.

The first time you do it, leave it in for the full 45 minutes or even 55.

Then, 7 weeks later, just do the roots, get a friend to help you do the back. Leave it in for 35 minutes. That way, the result is less obviously dyed. The roots blend better.

I've tried doing those rich chocolate brown shades but I look like I need a blood transfusion. I don't know why. Davina mcCall isn't tanned either.

Katz · 22/07/2009 14:03

dye now on - have time to do am emergency dash to hairdressers if it all goes horribly wrong! and if its good then i shall stop paying £40+ to have it dyes and go back to doing it myself.
