Do you have your hair coloured? Or are you happy to go grey?

I found a few grey hairs today and I don't want to be grey, not yet.

I am only just coming to terms with keeping on top of a persistent single black hair that emerges from my chin every couple of weeks.

What are my options re the hair greying?

EPPM I always imagine you are a blonde, like your DD.

bronze- they escaped through a tunnel in some mountains and her hair went white IIRC

foxinsocks · 11/07/2009 23:17

ooh pointy is back from her holiday!

I don't dye mine at all. But I have sort of dark blonde/grey blonde hair anyway so I don't think it's hugely noticeable but it won't bother me when I go more grey than it is now iyswim.

EachPeachPearMum · 11/07/2009 23:18

I was when I was 19!
For some reason pregnancy really affects my hair- each pg it has got darker - it is mid brown now, and has changed a lot. Other hair on my body has changed a lot too during pg... not sure I should go into detail... [coy emoticon]

My hair is similar to yours in that it is quite fine but there is absolutely tons of it (so much so that hairdressers nearly always comment ) but the grey ones are much coarser.

I found a white leg hair the other week... that was odd.

minko · 11/07/2009 23:21

I started going a bit grey at 23. I'm now 38 and probably as grey as an old badger, but I'm not ready to go natural. It's costing me £90 every 2 months but I'm hanging on to my 'blonde' hair...

RustyBear · 11/07/2009 23:23

But people only think they look older with grey hair because so many people dye it - if nobody did, grey would be normal from a much younger age & everyone would be used to it...

I know I'm not going to convince anyone else though....

bronze · 11/07/2009 23:24

Eachpeach I'm glad I didn't dream it

Swedes · 11/07/2009 23:25

Well I'd love to be able to say my few grey hairs were my only concern.

"But people only think they look older with grey hair because so many people dye it - if nobody did, grey would be normal from a much younger age & everyone would be used to it.." Isn't that a bit like saying well if noone went to the dentist, being toothless would be more acceptable?

OP posts:
EachPeachPearMum · 11/07/2009 23:30

Well some people must look good with grey hair... hence the term "silver fox"

minko · 11/07/2009 23:34

That'll be men...

RustyBear · 11/07/2009 23:35

Not really, Swedes - I know some people may find this difficult to believe - but grey hair isn't actually painful or harmful to your health!

Swedes · 11/07/2009 23:43

Rusty - You are wrong. It is actually a bit painful. If you don't want it; if you don't feel ready to embrace it.

And why wear a bra, go to the dentist, ever have a haircut?

OP posts:
Technofairy · 11/07/2009 23:45

Swedes you are very sweet!

One of the few things I have any control over is my hair. I've decided that I don't want to be grey so I dye it. That's my choice. I'm not ready to go grey yet and why the bloody hell should I be? I'm 41 not 71!!!

I'm sorry but I just do not understand why anyone of my age would quite happily accept it and not want to do anything about it. It's just another thing that Mother Nature throws at us. I shave my armpits, have my legs waxed, tidy up my eyebrows, moisturise my face, use sunblock and wax my upper lip. All so I am not some grey haired, hairy legged, spidery eyebrowed, dry skinned minger with a moustache. It's nothing to do with DP and what he might want, it's what I want. And it isn't that.

I just don't get it, sorry. Why would you go grey in your 30s or early 40s when you just don't need to? And know that you are going to be like that for the rest of your life?

So, ladies who embrace your grey at a young age, do you shave your armpits and legs and wear moisturiser? Would you be happy to keep your moustache if that's what you were given? If so why? Surely whatever Mother Nature throws at you you are happy with?

RustyBear · 12/07/2009 00:01

No, sorry, I don't buy the argument that says if I don't dye my hair I shouldn't shave my armpits, wear a bra or anything else on your list - I don't see why I can't pick & choose what I'm comfortable with & what I'm not - as I said, I'm not trying to change anyone else, it just doesn't bother me - if it bothers you, fine, spend your money on it if you want.

Although if I wasn't so laid back, being described as "some grey haired, hairy legged, spidery eyebrowed, dry skinned minger with a moustache" might annoy me just a little....

Technofairy · 12/07/2009 00:17

That was me I was describing, without my personal intervention, not you or anyone else. I'm more than happy to spend my money and time to avoid all those things for a good few years yet.

I just don't understand why anyone of my age would accept grey hair alongside all the other stuff that is thrown at us women when you don't need to and it makes you look older than you are.

RustyBear · 12/07/2009 00:30

Well, I accept grey hair because I don't think it makes me look older, it doesn't bother me, and because I have better things to do with my time & money. I do shave my armpits & legs, wear a bra & have my hair cut because they are all things that make me uncomfortable if I don't (and I mean physically uncomfortable) I can't quite see why you can't understand that anybody could feel like that?

Technofairy · 12/07/2009 00:39

Well I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one!

RustyBear · 12/07/2009 00:46

Looks like it! I know I'm outnumbered on this one

Quattrocento · 12/07/2009 01:02

"All so I am not some grey haired, hairy legged, spidery eyebrowed, dry skinned minger with a moustache."

So where do you draw the line? What's the harm in a little botox? An eyebrow lift? A little lipo? Why let that gravity stuff get you down, when silicone can keep you perky?

Blackduck · 12/07/2009 06:34

Hi Rusty - I'm with you! Being going grey since I was about 14 (runs in the familiy), and I don't dye it and won't start. It doesn't bother me and I don't think it ages me
Techno - your post is just rubbish 0 just because I don't dye my hair doesn't mean I don't do other things - wear a bra, moisturise etc. Horses for courses....

stressed2007 · 12/07/2009 06:53

have dark brown hair and grey (well it will be there somewhere under the dye). Have roots done at salon every 6-8 weeks - I am a tired out nearly 40 not 65 and I don't want to look any older then I can help it. It is the only professional thing I do beauty wise and is an absolute must for me.

mrsmerryweather · 12/07/2009 07:56

I will never go grey until I am 75 at least.

hassled made me smile- old age is always ten years on from your age now isn't it? I am around your "glad to be grey" age and there is no way I would go grey!

I have had highlights/low lights for years as my hair is a lightish brown anyway, and now the odd grey ones just blend in better.

I have seen some mums who were school-gate mums years back who have gone grey and almost without exception they all look very old......

you have to have really good skin/hair texture/ cut, to look good with grey hair until you get to your 60s or 70s- it's aging otherwise.

piscesmoon · 12/07/2009 08:08

I am not going grey until I am elderly either. I started with high lights-went onto low lights and am now coloured all over. I have no idea what it is like underneath-and don't want to find out!
