what's the mn-verdict on Next?

I actually quite like some of their stuff but have noticed that when it gets something right - you see it everywhere. and I can remember someone once really turning their nose up at it.

so....I have a 40th party to go to tomorrow night. my only realistic chance of any shopping between then and now is if I quickly scoot to an out-of-town big Next. tell me, mn style gurus, is it allowed?

I don't like Next, their clothes are cut oddly and nearly everyone wears it.

I have a few items from there though, vest tops, tee shirts and a cardi or two.

VeraChuckandDave · 19/06/2009 19:21

Don't like it. None of their stuff fits me properly and it almost all looks cheap and nasty imo (no offence intended to Next devotees).

On MN recommendations I have bought some of their trousers for ds1 (the only ones that fitted his skinny waist at the time) but I thought they looked horrible.

nickytwotimes · 19/06/2009 19:36

I quite like some of the stuff but it is a bit pricey for dull stuff, iyswim?
As loads of others have said, fine for day to day stuff, but not for a special frock.

traceybath · 19/06/2009 19:41

MrsM i've got the ruffle wedges in black and they are fab. I also rate their skinny jeans as fit well and reasonable price.

Wouldn't do any of their patterned stuff though.

Oh and their jeans are good for DH as he's tall and they do an extra long length.

Its like most shops though - you have to pick and choose.

Received the AW preview last week though and it looked pretty dire - overboard on patterns and cheap materials.

cheesesarnie · 19/06/2009 19:47

some is ok but some of it is just asda stuff with bigger price tag.and imo sizes come up large.

hf128219 · 19/06/2009 19:49

No, no, no. Everytime I walk in there I walk straight back out again.

Chuffinnora · 19/06/2009 20:01

I don't like their stuff. The work wardrobe stuff of sleeveless woolly top with pretend sewn in blouse is horrendous and yet there can't be an office in the country without one member of staff that wears them.

They have also cornered the market in smocky type tops that 50% of the mums in the yard wear.

If there is a Next in your out of town type place there must be other other shops - eve if it only Currys

pointydog · 19/06/2009 20:09

sometimes I ssee something I really like. Some of their things last a longm time. Doesn't cost too much.

next is ok sometimes

cocolepew · 19/06/2009 20:14

I like some stuff, mainly their t-shirts and casual linen trousers, their dressier stuff never fits me.

DippyDino · 19/06/2009 20:43

I love NEXT. I am known for it!

As with any shop, you pick and choose. 80% of their stuff is not for me, however I adore the other 20%, it looks fab on me but I don't 'look' like I'm wearing Next, if you know what I mean.

Have never felt let down by the quality, it lasts and lasts UNLESS you buy the REALLY cheap stuff, then you get what you pay for.

But for a posh night out? I would be tempted to buy plain-ish dress and get accessories from Next.

suwoo · 19/06/2009 20:49

I have never bought anything for myself there

LadyAga · 19/06/2009 20:51

I love the children's lines... but women's, eurgh, so frumpy.

Nappyzoneisabeetrootrunner · 19/06/2009 20:55

I like there stuff - i like it more in the sale.

hatwoman · 20/06/2009 00:01

good news - a friend is taking dd to drama tomorrow which means I have time (just) to get to town proper - and not just Next. phew. but it made for an interesting thread.

Poor quality naff clothes.

moondog · 20/06/2009 00:04

Love that comment about the
'work wardrobe stuff of sleeveless woolly top with pretend sewn in blouse is horrendous and yet there can't be an office in the country without one member of staff that wears them'.

So true.

For the price, I think they do a great job.

bluejeans · 20/06/2009 00:28

Aw I like the 'sleeveless woolly top with pretend sewn in blouse' type thing - bought a purply blue one lately - although girl in my office 15 yrs younger than me wore same top - and has not worn it snce after finding out I had it too

tigerdriver · 20/06/2009 00:43

cargo pants, if plain enough are ok, they need to be anonymous, ditto jeans. but anything patterned is fatal, you will just run into someone else wearing it. so Tshirts are out really unless completely plain. and much of it is frumpy or tries too hard. Their shoes atm are good, I have a really great pair of emerald green heels which I wear nearly every day and they are spot on.

bluejeans · 20/06/2009 00:48

About 3 yrs ago I was at the Eden project wearing a red and cream stripy top - saw about 4 others - put me off a bit!

Ronaldinhio · 20/06/2009 08:28

Good this year

inscotland · 20/06/2009 12:21

Good for jeans and home stuff but that is it. Their quality has gone down hill in the last few years and they seem to bring out the same styles everyt year.

lucykate · 20/06/2009 12:34

i have a duvet cover which is over 6 years old now, and has been on both dd's and ds's bed, and it's still like brand new. only thing i get from next for myself is the odd pair of jeans.

Heated · 20/06/2009 12:58

I will shop in their on-line sale if I get a priority slot, particularly for the dcs, but I am fussy. A few friends have asked me where I get dcs clothes - some are from Next but what I tend to go for is not recognisably Next-stuff I guess.

DS has a pirate themed duvet
Have some black and grey smart trousers
Ds has a pair of summer sandals
Dh has some Merrell trainers

I avoid anything that is: Next logoed, mock layered, mini-mugger, mini-hooker, sludge or acid coloured.

poshsinglemum · 20/06/2009 12:59

Some of the stuff is not frumpy. Some of it is. I just don't find the summer collection very inspiring.
Good kids clothes though.

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 20/06/2009 13:42

(altho that goes for any store which sells that look. FFS, layering ones own clothes is not rocket science, people!
