Am I too old for the leggings with long top look?

Noonki · 18/06/2009 22:00

I have got some money to spend on clothes for the first time in a loooooooong time.

the last time I really bought clothes I was in my twenties and slim.

I am now 35, a size 14 and a bit chubby in my middle, thighs a bit big but rest of legs still okayish.

Will everyone be sniggering behind my back?
go on be honest!

deffo go for it if you've got the legs!

fishie · 18/06/2009 22:09

yes of course you can. get good footwear though. what tops have you got in mind?

Lizzylou · 18/06/2009 22:10

I am 36, not exactly svelte and do the leggings and long top look. In fact last time I did I had compliments galore.

janeite · 18/06/2009 22:11

I am going to go against the grain. I think leggings look pretty bad on most people, whatever their age or size. I'm a size 12 and would not even contemplate them. I might at a push wear footless tights with a dress or skirt but absolutely not leggings and a top.

K999 · 18/06/2009 22:11

I'm 34 and wear this kind of thing. I tend to get the leggings that pretty much go down to my ankles as my legs look longer and wear with heels.

tattycoram · 18/06/2009 22:16

Of course you can, I'm 37 and often wear leggings with dresses. You need to experiment with different lengths of both top and leggings to see what works for you.

Paolosgirl · 18/06/2009 22:19

Leggings and a long top is a great look - just avoid the leggings and short denim skirt look. Not many of the young things get away with this!

Noonki · 18/06/2009 22:19

Okay, apart form janeite, most people wouldn't die of shock!

where do you all get tops/leggings from (I am a seriously bad shopper, I literally know nothing about fashion blame being a tomboy til I was about 18 )

Noonki · 18/06/2009 22:22

cheer for that Paologirl, that would be a step to far!

janeite · 18/06/2009 22:24

I wouldn't die of shock - I just think there are much nicer things out there.

Noonki · 18/06/2009 22:27

oh Janeite, give me some ideas. i am truely in need of a new wardrobe (I have shopped at jumbles for the last 5 years and have no idea at the best of times what actually suits me...

I asked this question too recently here and the answer was yes

But I haven't tried it out yet

mrsruffallo · 18/06/2009 22:31

I have a pair like this that look good with a floaty top or did you mean a short top?

Paolosgirl · 18/06/2009 22:31

Help Noonki out here Janeite so I can listen in, please - just turned 40 and in danger of turning to BHS

TsarChasm · 18/06/2009 22:31

Btw...That's 'yes do it, wear them!' not 'yes, you're too old and everyone will be sniggering'... just to clarify!

janeite · 18/06/2009 22:33

Oh gosh - now you're asking!

I would go for straight-legged dark jeans I think, with a fitted-ish top that skims over your waist and tummy.

LovelyDear · 18/06/2009 22:36

i wear them with almost knee length dresses and i'm 42. lots of my friends do and we all look lovely!

Clure · 19/06/2009 17:21

I think something like this would look good with leggings

TaLcYeth · 19/06/2009 17:28

Ha! I bought some wet look and some leather look leggings last week... and i'm 38.
Admittedly i haven't worn them outside...at least until i've lost half a stone ish...
...and my dds told me NEVER to wear them to the school.

So yes, to answer your question, leggings and long tops are fab.

CliffordtheBigRedCat · 19/06/2009 17:30

Janeite speaks sense. Listen to her

Noonki · 21/06/2009 11:59

thank you all! I am going to be brave and do the leggings and jeans (as suggested by Janiete.)

I love that top clure.

Where else should I go looking for reasonable priced /nice tops?

OP posts:
janeite · 21/06/2009 16:34

This for wearing with jeans and pretty flat sandals/flip flops or some wedges?

Noonki · 21/06/2009 21:40

ohhh nice, off to the scary place that is the trafford centre on Weds. I will try that on. thanks

JackBauer · 21/06/2009 22:03

I wear them and am a size 20. I always get more compliments when I do as opposed to normal jeans and top combo.
I tend to wear them with dresses that are a bit too short for decency, or tops that cover my bum!
