thick hair, strong hair, layers?

Oh a first for me to post in beauty but I do need help.

I've really strong and thick hair that sometimes takes on a life of its own. I've only ever had it in 2 styles: very short (which people say suits me, but I couldn't do this any more as it really needs regular cuts and I can't afford that)

bob, just under the chin, shape. It looks OK and at this length it does fall naturally. But I'm sooooo sick of it. I've looked like this when I was 15 to 18 and from my late twenties onwards.

Once i had it quite long and it was gorgeous but I tied it up all the time and never showed it off.

What would layers be like? Ah I'm useless at describing it and couldn' tpost a photo...

help?

I have very thick hair and I could only have layers if I went much longer: bob length and layers will turn you into a great big mushroom.

pillowcase · 16/06/2009 10:01

mrsbabookaloo,
thank you!!!! I think I needed to hear that!

I'm afraid of that, I would like it longer so maybe I'll just trim (again) for the moment and leave the layers for another date

i disagree, non layered bob is a big mushroom. get a pob style layered bob.

ps. i have the thickest hair known to man.

pesme · 16/06/2009 10:07

i mean this

not this!

mrsbabookaloo · 16/06/2009 10:16

OK, pesme, I am a great big mushroom whatever I try to do.

They do cut some layers into the bottom of my bob to try to take the weight out. I don't think I could get away with that Victoria Beckham thing at all: wouldn't work on my hair. Also I'm a low maintenance kinda girl: no product, wash and blow dry infrequently; VB is never going to be my role model.

talbot · 16/06/2009 10:38

I too have ridiculously thick heair and have had it in a chin length bob for 20 years. Every single hairdresser has always said to me that it's the perfect cut for my hair. However, I am so damn sick of it that I am going to go for a "choppy" look (same overall length) on my next visit. I'll let you know how I get on.

pesme · 16/06/2009 10:41

thing is, i used to be a no blow dry kinda gel but the older i get the coarser it gets. i am now resigned to occassionaly drying it and sometimes i even brush it. i have a horror of turning into a frizzy old lady triangle head.

Molesworth · 16/06/2009 10:42

I've got really thick hair too and have to have layers, otherwise it looks like a big triangle on my head

[pats moles mushroom]

SammyK · 16/06/2009 10:51

I have very thick hair too, and have tried a multitude of styles.

Long works for me as it seems the weight of it being long means it's less mushroom looking. Short layers are bad for me, and bobs are bery high maintenance I have found.

I did the mn haircut which looked really nice straightened, now it has grown a little since I don't need to straighten it.

talbot · 16/06/2009 11:01

Long is defo better for me too but I'm over 40 now and not sure I can carry it off.

Molesworth · 16/06/2009 11:11

I'm also in my 40s now and definitely can't carry off long hair, so at the moment mine is a sort of rough approximation of a pob. The trouble is it gets even harder to manage as they grey takes hold

Biglips · 16/06/2009 11:14

layers thins your hair out...just like mine

talbot · 16/06/2009 11:26

Molesworth I started the process of going lighter 2 years ago in reposnse to the spreading grey. I miss my nice dark glossy hair but this way, with highlights, I only need a tint every 6 - 8 weeks which given I'm 40% grey is great. I am also hoping that it will make the eventual transition to silver easier to manage.

Molesworth · 16/06/2009 11:39

That's exactly what I need to do - I am going (very slowly) from dark to medium brown at the moment. I really don't want to end up being one of those old women with a black hair helmet

pesme · 16/06/2009 11:41

yes navy triangle hair and cerise lippy that is all cracked round teh edges - not a good look.

MrsTittleMouse · 16/06/2009 11:44

I struggle too. My hair is "wavy" which all the magazines tell me is great. Except that of course women with long wavy hair don't actually look like Giselle unless they've had it set at the hairdresser. I long for straight hair that will fall into a style, instead I have stubborn hair with a massive cow lick that I either have to have long enough for the weight to pull it into a shape, or really short, which is too expensive to maintain. I worry that both looks are going to be aging when I'm not too far into my 40s too.

Molesworth · 16/06/2009 11:45

I feel like I've found my spiritual home on MN

I too have a massive cow's lick. I feel your pain, MrsTittleMouse!

pesme · 16/06/2009 11:46

we are all turning into susan boyle!

talbot · 16/06/2009 11:46

Me too with the cowlick!

bleh · 16/06/2009 11:48

Okay. I have really fine crappy hair, so how about one of you gives me about a third of yours.

Easy.

Molesworth · 16/06/2009 11:52

You're welcome to it bleh. When I have my hair cut there's enough on the floor to fill a mattress

MrsTittleMouse · 16/06/2009 11:54

Actually, even worse than the cowlick was the cut that I had just after I left school. I explained to the hairdresser that I wanted a short cut like this and ended up with this. No word of a lie. I went home and sobbed under the bed covers for the rest of the day. I still don't know how I managed to go out and face the world after than one.

I still don't really trust hairdressers with anything other than a trim.

talbot · 16/06/2009 11:54

I'm hoping that with hair thinning, by the time I get to 85, I'll finally have the right amount of hair.
