Shall I buy my 12-year-old DD this dress?

She spotted this and liked it - she is very picky as will only wear red, black and purple.
I am not sure, and am not sure why I am not sure, IYSWIM?
Mumsnet, you decide.

I would buy dd that (11) in the largest size they do so it wasn't so clingy and then I would specify she could only wear it with leggings. I think its too adult looking, tight and without leggings.

Swedes · 07/06/2009 17:32

Are you tempted because it only costs a fiver?

madwomanintheattic · 07/06/2009 17:32

i'd want to know how she intended to wear it first... it could go either way, that one...

cocolepew · 07/06/2009 17:32

Well it's black and red what's the problem?
It's lovely, I would buy it.

LittleMissBliss · 07/06/2009 17:33

would look nice with leggings, i see nothing wrong with it, plus its only a fiver, you can't really go wrong.

WinkyWinkola · 07/06/2009 17:33

It's fine. Dennis the Menace colours.

pointydog · 07/06/2009 17:34

I love it. To be worn with leggings or thick denier tights, I'd'a thought

Swedes · 07/06/2009 17:36

It's too clingy, Lolita for me. My daughter would have to be at least 30 and have bought her first house before I'd buy her such a garment.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 07/06/2009 17:38

Thanks. I think my reservation is that it is a bit figure hugging. However, she doesn't, as yet, have a figure to hug, in that sense, and as you say would probably wear it with thick tights or leggings and Converse.

I wore jumper dresses (yes I'm that old) around 11 and 12 years old, this reminds me of them.

I didn't go on to join the Pussycat Dolls so I think your DD will be fine.

pointydog · 07/06/2009 17:42

good over skinny black jeans too

Swedes · 07/06/2009 17:43

In all fairness, perhaps that picture in the link does it no favours. (Stares at the see-through bit between the tops of the legs). Perhaps it would look lovely dressed up with leggings or coloured tights.

pointydog · 07/06/2009 17:45

I hadn't noticed see through bit! You are really peering, swedes.

If it was see through, then def to go over leggings or skinnies. dd1 will often wear a vest top under anything slightly see through

SammyK · 07/06/2009 17:47

I agree with black leggings or skinny jeans would be fine.

nickschick · 07/06/2009 17:50

Oh i think she will love it!! get it bought!!!

Swedes · 07/06/2009 17:51

I'm torn. I can't decide if it's a long Breton Sweater Dress or a Tarty Little Number. I think if you wore it without tights of leggings, you would need freexing cold, thin, purple, blotchy legs to complete the look.

TrillianAstra · 07/06/2009 17:56

No more figure-hugging than a shaped t-shirt. Not especially adult-looking. Wear with jeans or leggings. It's fine, IMO.

nickschick · 07/06/2009 17:57

i think itd look great with black skinny jeans too.

Ohhh Im all for it fgs BUY IT HER!!!!!

MaggieBee · 07/06/2009 18:06

It's nice!

janeite · 07/06/2009 18:13

Oh I remember your twelve year old because I have one who is very similar!

I think, worn loosely with leggings or footless tights and black PE-type pumps it could be v cute in a Minnie the Minx way. It comes in black and white too by the look of things and is probably a bit less 'mature' looking in that version.

My dd went shopping with her big sister (no adults) for the first time yesterday (agh) and came back with this which is actually really lovely (and very Vivienne Westwood) but the wrong colours for your dd!

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 07/06/2009 18:32

I like that Janeite. Too fancy for DD though! I have ordered the dress now, and I think if she wears it over thick tights or her black skinny jeans it will be fine.
She has the curves of an ironing board and lives in Converse so no chance of mistaking her for Lolita I think.

What size do you think 'age 14' is in grownup sizes? I like some of the teenage stuff...

pointydog · 07/06/2009 19:00

AGE 14 would be no less than an 8, I'd say

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 07/06/2009 19:01

DD fits age 12 and can manage a size 6 petite at Topshop if that's any help.

OP posts:
pointydog · 07/06/2009 19:03

yes, dd1 (12) buys size 6
