Cheap but nice multifunctional dresses

I want to wear more dresses. Preferably ones that can be worn in a variety of situations (not too beachy, not too dressy, not too worky).

My favourite dress in the whole wide world is actually from New Look, it's jersey material, deep V-neck, sleeveless, black blue green and white, and just above the knee. I can wear it in winter with thick tights or im summer with bare legs, I can put a little top under it to make it less nork-revealing if I want but I don't have to.

Please find me some pretty dresses, up to a maximum of £40 each? I know you can do it.

I'm 5'7, slim on top, not very significant norkage, waist and bum are fine but chunky calves so dresses need to be above the knee, anything that stops below the knee or on the calf is bad.

I have lusted after it for a loooong time and now the weathr is nice I may just trundle along and buy it for myself Lots of nice new stuff on their website atm

littlelamb · 03/06/2009 12:08

ooo trillian, I've tried that dress on. The sleeves are bizarre

TrillianAstra · 03/06/2009 12:10

But it's pretty and purple. I'll go in the shop then and check out the weird sleeves.

Hmm, saw it in the shop but wasnt keen on the material, couldn't see your blue dress at all littlelamb.

White stuff had some nice dresses, but they were all just-below-knee length which is not a good look on me. Can't link, to the one I saw that was lovely, but just looking for it online means I see more nice things, like this blue dress.

Looked in New Look but it was a big mess, and the red umbrella dress wasn't visible anywhere.

I'm going to go to the shopping centre tomorrow which has a few different shops and another New Look, so I'll see if I see anything, otherwise it'll have to be online.

You have to pick through the stuff, some is a bit old lady

I have this dress Really really well made

The website has a store finder

TrillianAstra · 03/06/2009 19:56

like the look of this one but it's out of stock in my size anyway.

And this one is nice but I'd almost rather it had the super-low V so could put whatever I wanted under it. And I'm not 100% sure about the colours.

Agree with Bald I have that dress and it is lovely, had loads of complements when wearing it.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 03/06/2009 20:00

First one lovely but polyester

Second one I'd like to see in RL, the colours can't always be replicated well

ComeOVeneer · 03/06/2009 20:00

Will say though the background colour is more beigey than it appears in that picture (or at least the pic on my computer)

BoysAreLikeDogs · 03/06/2009 20:01

heh heh CoV I'd forgotten you've got that one too

TrillianAstra · 03/06/2009 20:05

OP posts:

Randomly bumping for anyone else who might be interested.

Dresses under £40 people, there must be some! Going to look in Debenhams today, might take a peek at H&M even though it's often really poor quality.

Thereare no dresses in RL that I want. Not where I went today anyway.

It's all 'like the pattern hate the cut' or 'lke the shape but not the colour' or (my personal favourite) 'bugger I've wandered into the maternity section!'

BALD I went in there today and got a lovely sun dress for £10 and a pair of greeny/bluey sandals that go perfectly with that dress!

LaTrucha · 04/06/2009 20:04

V. impressed by M&CO!

Love the georgette spotty one.

TrillianAstra · 04/06/2009 22:40

I'll do some online searching tomorow - might need your help...

TrillianAstra · 04/06/2009 22:43

Oooh yes LaTrucha, the spotty one is pretty. Neckline just not very me (I want lower!)

Okay so I have ordered this one as well as this cardigan in 'dragonfly'.

I couldn't find a free delivery code for New Look but you can get 8% cashback at TopCashBack. I also got a massive 12% off the stuff I ordered at La Senza. That link is for signing up as being recommended by me (which means if you use it I get a pound or something) but it doesn't affect how you use it at all, I just thought I should be honest and let you know.
