Recommend me a shampoo

I've never really thought very hard about the shampoo and conditioner I use. I usually pick whatever is on offer, or when I'm feeling flush, Aussie, because it smells lush.

However, I think it is time that I put as much thought into my shampoo as I do my moisturiser in an effort to elevate it from stringy lanky nothingness to sleek, shiny and soft.

My hair is mid-boob length, mid brown, poker straight, fine, prone to dry ends and greasy roots. I don't wash it every day, rarely blow dry it or actually do anything with it except brush it. I find many shampoos make my hair heavy and greasy. So does anyone have any recommendations for me?

I usually use Kerastase, it costs a bit but is really good.

However I have just started using L'oreal Kids 2 in 1 no tears, very berry burst (strawberry pink bottle) and seriously it is bloody brilliant. I usually need loads of conditioner and I've never found a decent 2 in 1 shampoo, but this is brilliant. No need for conditioner at all.

Aveda - amazing but £££

the Umberto Gianni range is mid price and excellent

TBH, pantene is also ok

KatyMac · 26/05/2009 20:28

I use Aussie & I have sleek, shiny & soft.......honest

I wash it every 5 or 6 days but I think 5 days is about perfect

I have tried loads over the years including the expensive stuff; I am currently using Tresemme shampoo and conditioner(the one with the green label) which is really good on my long fine hair. I have a tendency to get quite heavy or even greasy hair with some products and this leaves my hair feeling light and clean

I have fine hair too, but it is highlighted so that gives it volume. I think you will have to wash your hair every few days anyway, with any shampoo. But, maybe (depending on your budget) go for something like a hair powder in you want to stretch your washes out a little further. Bumble and bumble do one, and they are E.G brown/blonde/black etc to match your hair colour. These give a roughness and texture, and kind of surfy look, whilst removing any oil.

Otherwise, there is a loreal one that I think is for fine hair that gets greasy quickly, and although I have not tried it, I use loreal for coloured hair and find this very good, and my blonde hair is super-sdhimmery and shiny (which is hard to get with chemically treated hair)

Karastase also do a shampoo and conditioner range called 'body full' and I have used this in the past, and thought it was good too (expensive though)

Regarding styling, could you manage to just dry your roots by pushing your hair in the opposite direction with your fingers? This will give good volume at the roots, even if you cannot be bothered with drying it properley.

I wish I could leave mine 5 or 6 days between washing...it just gets so lank, I barely make it to 3 days!

Thanks for the tips. I do use the Batise (?) dry shampoo occasionally. I do find certain shampoos and conditioners make my hair really heavy. I don't know why but I have this feeling that certain shampoos make your hair feel smooth by coating them in silicone or something which build up. Is that the case? Should I be looking towards more natural products?

Dove Therapy.

I use Cynthia Sylvia Stout (yes, that really is what is called) from Lush. Costs about £11 for a 500ml bottle, smells lovely (not too beery so you smell like a pub, just nice and sweet). Leaves my hair feeling not heavy at all, just light and bouncy. It is approved by the vegan society and uses mainly organic ingredients (not that I'm a lentil knitter particularly, but I like that about it).

I don't like all the shampoos that make your hair all silky - I just end up with really greesy hair within a day and can't style it at all.

poshwellies · 26/05/2009 22:20

Mop or Aveda.Paul Mitchell is good also.

I don't like Aussie,I feel it's too heavy and makes my roots even greasier.

I use T-gel every few weeks to combat the greasy roots aswell.

Green People Aloe Vera shampoo andconditioner - love it, i have lots of fine hair prone to greasy roots, andit's the best thing since sliced bread for me

missmelly · 27/05/2009 15:40

best shampoo i've ever used is Crabtree and Evelyn La Source. It's a little pricey, about £10 or so for a bottle, but you only need a drop and it keeps my oily hair fresh, smells gorgeous and lasts for ever! It was originally made for the Hilton Hotels, but was so popular they started producing it in normal size bottles.

Bumperlicioso · 27/05/2009 20:48

See now every now and then I think 'when I've got enough money I'll invest in some Green People Shampoo, it's expensive but it sounds like it lasts' and then my shampoo runs out and I end up buying Herbal Essences as it's always BOGOF. I will check out all your suggestions, thanks.

Your hair sounds similar to mine. I have found John Frieda Brunette range to be great. I wash my hair every other day. I recently had some botched highlights and the JF conditioner was the only thing standing between me and awful frizz (having tried a range of very expensive treatments). Highly recommend it.
