Can everyone really wear black?

Can you?

Because I don't think I can. It makes me look ill.

I'd love to be able to though.

Someone told me that even if you can't wear black when young, you will eventually be able to wear it as you get older? Is this true?

I'm not sure I can wear grey Geo - pale grey washes me out totally - maybe the darker end of the scale would be ok???

NoddyH - gosh I have never met a redhead who doesn't suit brown - it just shows how often we do NOT conform to stereotype ... and I do like the sound of your outfit btw...

Tracy - you are another who finds black less flattering as you get older so that leaves SouthEastra as the only person so far who has confirmed the theory ....

I look terrible in it.I find brown v mumsy although I see others in it looking great.I also love white which shouldn't work but does but cream is awful on me.

BonsoirAnna · 26/05/2009 14:37

Brown is very difficult. I have one brown sweater dress, but it goes over a much lighter polo neck that brightens up the whole look - and apart from that, I really don't wear brown anymore (and probably shouldn't ever have done so).

traceybath · 26/05/2009 14:40

Brown is tricksy i think - have one chocolate brown long cardigan which is nice but otherwise it can look a bit frumpy.

I also suit pale/pearly grey but not charcoal.

Am so glad that navy is fashionable again.

LOl Solo ... now that's a really good excuse for buying a few more clothes than usual!!

Oh I love Deuaville ... have only visited once though. Lots of dressing up for the races then Anna (or do they over there?)... It's the little tottering sparrow legs under the mink coats in the winter down south (well, let's call it under 19°C) that always get me ..

I think black suits people much more often than grey. There's so much grey stuff around these days, it's so draining.

White also does not suit many people, I think.

I sat in with my friend while she had her colours done once and it was amazing to see the way colours affected her complexion, made her look young/old, or just plain didn't suit her. She looked good in black actually. But the woman said about grey being a no no for many different "types".

Countingthegreyhairs · 26/05/2009 14:47

Oh I love brown (but I do brighten it up with accessories) and don't wear dark brown near my face and at the risk of sounding really ancient, I love a proper camel too ...

Couldn't agree more TraceyBath about navy being so readily available this year!! It was nowhere to be found six months a go ... 'tis such a relief ...

Love taupe too ... I could pass for a mole any day of the week ...

I love taupey colours with jeans

Geocentric · 26/05/2009 14:51

That's interesting about grey... I always thought it automatically suited most types.

Love the image of elderly French ladies! We see the type over here in Brazil, too. Accompanied (always) by bleach-blond-straightened hair.

Countingthegreyhairs · 26/05/2009 15:00

I think grey probably does suit most people Geo it's just I'm exceptionally mousey and sallow-looking nowadays ..

x posts PuppyMonkey - I make the mistake of wearing white in summer just because it's the obvious thing to do - and as often been quoted here ... one does tend to end up looking like a baker (especially if one is big of nork)

I guess having my colours done would be one way to find out but as I'm virtually phobic about hairdressers or beauty salons I think, er, I may not ...

Counting, I did take the others back, I didn't keep them all

Geocentric · 26/05/2009 15:05

CTGH, I would love to have my colours done... Did it for fun with some friends once (we just collected loads of coloured items and tried to figure out our seasons) and I think I'm a spring, but it would be cool to have it done properly.

foofi · 26/05/2009 15:09

I rarely wear anything other than black.

In fact at a wedding a couple of weeks ago, a friend who I have known for many years said it was the first time she had ever seen me not wearing black.

Did I mention I love wearing black?

I don't like pale grey either, I like my greys to be warm and soft (if that makes any sense).

BonsoirAnna · 26/05/2009 16:43

LOL Geocentric at the bleached blond straightened hair - there were a mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother (ie three generations of females) waiting for a little boy outside my DD's school the other day, all identikit long haired blondes! With their fur coats and Prada bags!

Geocentric · 26/05/2009 17:39

Anna!

Countingthegreyhairs · 26/05/2009 19:10

Oh, shame Solo!!

Foofi - you remind me of Kristen Scott Donkey's character in Four Weddings!!

Me too Hanaflower!!

GeoC - yr way of doing colours sounds much more fun than going to do it professionally - good excuse for a bottle of wine and a get together ... mmm... might just do that ...
