Teeth bleaching - anyone tried it?

I am paying £300 next week to my dentist for some bleaching trays to be worn at night for 2 weeks in order to match up some darker teeth to other lighter ones - has anyone tried this?

I would love to hear your experiences!

hiya flobble, it works a treat, but you cannot smoke or drink red wine, coffee etc, or you may as well pour your 300 quid straight down the toilet, coz they will stain. They could possibly be more sensitive too, depending on how strong the acid is in the 'bleach'. Its a lot of money to fork out, but you will get really good results. The dentist makes A FORTUNE on it, its an extremely profitable procedure for him, so make sure he looks after you, and tells you EVERYTHING you want to know. Believe me, i know, i'm a practice manager

and as for the trays costing £100 to be made, WHAT A RIP OFF!! My BIL owns a dental lab, the trays cost about five pounds to make and the dentist would be charged about £20 max as a lab fee. thats an astronomical mark up. Dentistry is such a racket

Oh,am now gutted from South London! Have bought said whitening treatment from e bay only to be told..................I CAN'T DRINK RED WINE???!!!FFS!!!!-May as well throw it in the bin then????????????

Henda · 10/05/2005 21:46

it does stain REALLY badly. Sorry

flobbleflobble · 06/06/2005 13:26

Just reporting back on this - have had the trays for a week and there is some improvement but I am hoping there will be more improvement yet to come!!
Have not stopped drinking tea & coffee during this time though so not sure how much that is undermining the treatment!

The links to the bleaching syringes look very handy if I run out, and yes, the dentists really are charging far too much for this!!! I will report back in another week - maybe I will have a cracking smile by then

I've found a great tooth whitening product - Blanx tooth whitening toothpaste. I first saw it on a shopping channel but Boots have just started stocking it. It's a natural non-abrasive tooth whitener containing artic lichen and also helps the enamel. Dh and I noticed a real difference after just a few days. Boots have an offer on at the moment of 3 for 2. Highly recommended as other toothpastes haven't really made any difference to me. It's also been given seal of approval by WHO.

And it's only £6.99 in Boots - bargain!!

Mog · 15/06/2005 21:31

Following the body lotion thread, I thought I'd bump this as Boots have a two for one offer on Blanx at the moment and it really works.

OMG I just bought some of that Super White 22% stuff off ebay.. It cam e today. It was £7.75 that is just toooooo cheap.

Am I gonna die if I use it.

I want to look sparkly for my wedding next month not toothless!!! I'm scared to use it.

Booked in for a scale and polish next week thought might use it after that. or not. might be too scared.

reassurance anyone?

twirlaround · 14/07/2005 16:09

my mum tried but messed up the tray moulding bit & found the trays too uncomfortable to keep in!

Branster · 14/07/2005 21:06

Flum I don't know it it'll work or not or wether it's safe to use but I wanted to say best waith for your teeth clean-up at the dentist because if you have any build-up of plaque on your teeth, it may turn up yellow whilst your teeth turn whiter (if they do!). I'm thinking on the principle of household bleaching, have you ever experience white tops turning yellow in area you tried bleaching because of stains? Not scientific, but a thought of mine.

Flum · 15/07/2005 23:14

haven't done it. dentist said mine didn't need it and it would make them brittle and lead to problems later in life as teeth would break!!!

Twiglett · 15/07/2005 23:16

have just bought the tooth whitening pack from boots .. looks scary .. will do it next week (supposed to have no bleach in it)

jasper · 16/07/2005 00:35

we do it at our practice. Results are great.
We do NOT make a fortune on it. In fact I don't really like doing it because it takes a long time to explain everything. It is really just a hassle.
Our trays do indeed cost MORE THAN £100 to be made. (£55 each tray) and we are not in a posh part of the country.

You really need to stop drinking tea and coffee and any highly stained or spicy foods in the meantime for the best results.

Flum · 16/07/2005 23:19

jasper, does it damage teeth in the long term then.

dp very anti it. he used to live in US and remembers a girlfriend with wierdly glow in the dark teeth
