Black tie with an 11-year-old in tow

It's another wedding one - sorry!
Have been invited to a wedding at the end of July, with DH and Tiny Clanger. It is being held at a hotel (ceremony and reception) and has a black tie dress code. The bride has unfortunately turned bridezilla and has now banned women from wearing black.
Although I do quite like fashion, I am not versed in this sort of thing. My current "wedding outfit" has black trousers and is not really black tie, I don't think. My quandary is twofold:

  1. What do I wear? I'm 35, 5'2" with v. short blonde hair and have recently lost a fair bit of weight, so size 10. I normally prefer tailored, shift-type dresses (a la Jackie Onassis, in my head) or trousers for posh events. I cannot wear heels. A fair few of the dresses on the "statement dress" thread caught my eye, so that sort of thing is what I'm after. Does that count as black tie? Also, do I need a hat? I do not like to wear anything strapless, boned or prom style. Budget is about £100.

  2. What can Tiny Clanger wear? She is 11, 5' tall, slim with long legs, and blonde. AAlthough she needs teen-sized clothes for the length, she does still look her age and I want to buy something age-appropriate, so nothing too grown up but equally nothing too babyish. She prefers tops and skirts and her favourite colour is purple.
Under no circumstances must she match me!
TIA - all help gratefully received.

soem of the karen millen dresses on that thread were lovely. satin and shift like. def black tie and fab on size 10

no you don't need a hat, unless you want one. plenty hair accessories out there if you feel the need

can you wear small heels that are not thin( = hard to walk in)

11yo can wear any dressy top and skirt. that woudl be easier than dress for that age. i have a skinny 9yo DD and i feel your pain

KristinaM · 24/05/2009 22:41

my DD woudl wear this next red roses but it might be too young for yours

pink roses

a bargain though!!

i dont think an 11yo should be expected to be very formal. and she will probably only wear it once

Bump - have realised that shopping opportunities with DD are quite limited now as she has stuff to do at weekends.
I think I know what I'm looking for now - thanks!
