Fascinators: "socially" acceptable alternative to a hat for a wedding or a bit too WAGS go to Aintree?

I have bought a fascinator for DB's wedding later this year but really I'd prefer to wear a hat but am yet to find a nice one which doesn't have a pricetag that makes me wince.

So will end up in the fascinator probably but am still a bit about them.

What do you think?

Perfectly acceptable. I have a cream swirly one I've worn to a few weddings now. IMHO way more modern than a hat! Rx

boudoiricca · 20/05/2009 13:12

As long as you have requisite orange fake tan and 6" heels you'll be fine...

angelene · 20/05/2009 13:16

Why wear either? Hats squash your hair down and I'm not keen on deelyboppers fascinators.

This may be because I'm 5'4" and hats squash me down and make me look shorter though.

nickytwotimes · 20/05/2009 13:18

I am more than a bit about them personally.
Hat or nowt in my book

AllwaysDoingSomething · 20/05/2009 13:26

I like fascinators, a lot. I think they are more than acceptable, even without the orangw tan and 6" heels....
If you'd really like a hat, can I suggest you hire one?

stripeypineapple · 20/05/2009 13:34

I can never remember the name fascinator(not that I have to use it regularly ), the word that always springs to mind instead in an aggravator.

I went to a wedding recently, my DP's brother's, and their Mum wore one, she took it off half way through the day because it was irritating.

Not particularly helpful to you in your decision but thought I'd contribute

Joggler · 20/05/2009 13:36

dont like

get your hair done instead

angelene · 20/05/2009 13:40

stripeypineapple My friend and I call them 'accelerators'! Hours of fun round our way, I tell you.

OP agree with joggler, definitely get your hair done, will make you feel loads better.

I am going to a wedding this summer, and although I would prefer a hat, it is going to be a casual relaxed affair in the garden...I will probably wear a fascinator, but nothing too mad. They can look fab, but I have seen some absolute shockers.

Okay, okay.
I challenge all those fascinator-excusers to give us a link to any fascinator which does not make you look like a tit.

Come on!

Neena28 · 20/05/2009 14:30

I would try and find a hat to be honest. Try TK Maxx if you have one near you. Local one to me has an amazing selection of very nice hats for £30. I have only been in twice before but really rated the dresses and accessories for things like weddings.

I personally don't really like fascinators, mostly i think because at the wedding you go to at least half of the female guests will be wearing them (or have been at the last few weddings I have been to). I think they all look quite cheap too and get blown about/dislodged very easily.

How about a beautiful vintage look hair clip?

womma · 20/05/2009 14:44

They do seem to be everywhere, so I'd steer clear for that reason alone.
Have a look at the hair accessories by Johny loves Rosie and Cherry Chau online, they're really lovely. Accessorize also has some nice ones.
Or just get your hair done, whatever you decide I'm sure you'll look lovely!

In theory, I love 'em but in practice they look daft/cheap on most of the women I've seen too.

I am contemplating the wedding hat on the cheap dilemma for myself & am going to pick up a second hand hat & have lots of fun customising it. So don't listen to me, 'cos sailing close to the wind style wise from time to time is all part of the fun IMO .
