Birkenstocks - worth the money or cheap alternative?

Nearly bought a pair today for £39 but thought I'd hold off to find a cheaper kind of sandal. Are birkies really that much better or is it just a lable thing?

I picked up a pair of madrids at the QVC outlet shop in Shrewsbury for £7. They sell them on QVC but for a heck of a lot more than I paid for them. The downside is that they are baby pink which I find doesn't go with much, although they are fine with jeans I suppose!

I like the one's on Demented's ebay link - the Gizeh style - might have to get some

Is nubuck like suede?

does it mark if they get wet?

If so you then brush them and ok again?

What is "Birko Flor"? And do I order my regular size (ie a 40?)

Report

Birko flor is:

Birko-flor is a skin friendly and extraordinarily tear resistant material. The easy-care surface has a leather-like look. A soft fleece is incorporated into the second layer which is supple yet sturdy. Birko-flor is our progressive yet inexpensive alternative to leather.

I think Birkenstocks are worth every penny, if ordering online bear in mind that IME they come up small, I am size 39 but always buy 38 Birkenstocks. I have bought from jestel and they are fab (and much cheaper) but the surface mail, which is free, takes YONKS. I lived in Germany 11 yrs ago and used to take the mickey out of all the Birkenstock wearers and now love them since they've become fashionable, am clearly deeply shallow!

Sooo excited!! Just ordered 3 pairs from Jestel. The Madrids in strawberry, Ramses in dark brown and a pair of Roma childs in khaki for ds1, I think they'll be perfect for summer for hi sweaty feet (he's 4, is this normal????).

All for less than £70 - with free p&p.

So that's a 5 week countdown LOL
