What do men wear for cocktail?

DH and I are going to a party on Saturday night. Dress code is Cocktail - Smart, Sophis & Sexy . I am planning on wearing a black, tight little bodycon number but what on earth should my DH wear? A suit? (He only really has 'work' suits) Nice jeans and a shirt? I personally think he'd look fab in some slim tuxedo trousers and a crisp white shirt, but sadly these items are not present in his wardrobe...ideas??

normally, I'd recommend a suit, but if not: smart jeans, crisp white shirt, smart jacket and loafers. (sorry, currently picturing George Clooney. Don't know how that matches up with your DH though).

Suit. Could he get a new snazzier shirt/tie to go with it? One that's too cool for work in some way?

Not jeans. Suit.

Great, thanks girls. Suit it is - unless I can persuade hime to buy some much-needed smart trousers before the weekend...

No novelty ties though please!

Cocktail for men should be a "lounge suit" i.e. a regular suit. Jeans would not be acceptable for this dress code.

He needs a fab shirt (preferably not white).

He shouldn't wear a tie but a pair of cufflinks looks gorgeous (no novelty items though as hf12819).

Absolutely agree on the novelty ties thing, luckily he does have pretty good dress sense normally, well, good enough not to own anything that could be classed as a novelty tie. Ditto cufflinks - Tiffany beans all the way!

What do you mean by fab shirt? I think actually prefer men to wear a really well-cut white shirt, as opposed to anything black/purple/patterned (bleurgh!) so am interested to hear of any alternatives...
