Best value/quality toddler waterproofs?

Are they the Muddy Puddles ones? They're pretty expensive, but maybe they won't fall apart? I think Jojo do them too.

We need some all-in-ones for DS, who is 14m. Ideally, they'd last him for rainy days this summer and into next winter. He'll be about 20 m by the end of the year. Don't know if it's better to get the dungarees/wader types and a top to go over, or the 'boilersuit' sort.

Any tips?

Togz are really good and VERY hardwearing but wash up well.

Muddy Puddles. They are expensive but worth it. You can sometimes get them cheaper on ebay. They are absolutely worth it -- my dc spend days at a time out in the woods, and you can save mountains of washing by putting them in waterproofs over their ordinary trousers.

I always get the dungaree ones, for when it's wet underfoot but not actually raining, and then buy a separate rainjacket for wet/cold weather. Probably works out slightly more expensive than the all-in-ones, but more flexible.

They come up v. big, so don't be tempted to buy a size up.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 09/05/2009 15:13

Yup -- agree with Gentle Otter. Togz are brilliant. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the sizing is rather generous. DD is 2.9 and wears the 2-3 year old version and comfortably has at least another couple of years in it...

mejon · 09/05/2009 15:15

I got DD a Togz dungaree thing recently from ebay at around half the rrp. She's a small 2.9 year old and the 2-3 year old size I got is huge and will last for years by the look of it! I went for the dungarees as we'd have the option of going without a coat on top if it was wet underfoot but otherwise dry or if she was just playing in the garden/mud after rain.

Tillyscoutsmum · 09/05/2009 15:23

DD has Togz (boiler suit one) and gets loads of wear out of it. They do come up big but have velcro adjusters at the wrists and ankles so they're ok to be worn big iyswim ? That way, they should last a good couple of years

KristinaM · 09/05/2009 15:25

another vote for togz

we have three of these warm and dry suits and they are fab

i have to tell you that IME their customer service is excellent. i had problems with DDs suit after a LOT of use for about 2 years. i phoned them up about it and they told me they had identified the defect and changed the design. They sent me a free replacement the next day, even though I had no receipt and I had not returned the faulty one

i was WELL impressed

new suit still going after another couple of years

MamaHobgoblin · 09/05/2009 18:05

Thanks for all the recs! I'll look at Togz too, then.
Think we'd rather go down the dungarees and top route, too.

Kristina, sounds brilliant customer service - to replace after 2 years!

We've tried a lot of different ones and I would definitely recommend these (from VikingKids) specifically the first ones at the top. They're really fab! Have lasted for ages with a lot of heavy wear and tear, and they're super comfy too, really soft material. Nice colours too! They're definitely the best value for money from the brands that we've tried (including togz and muddy puddles).

I would definitely go with the top/dungarees option. I always found that DS would get soaking wet inside an all-in-one, plus they're sweaty. We use the dungarees a lot on their own when it's warm but muddy, they're great. DS and DD also like the coats on their own as well, they wear them to school a lot.

SoupDragon · 11/05/2009 12:00

Our Muddy Puddle trousers are on their 3rd child

dancingqueen78 · 11/05/2009 12:03

Oh, and the Vikingkids ones also come up big. If you get the 2-year size it will seem huge now but that doesn't really matter, they're still comfy and the elastic holds them in place over wellies. They'd probably last you utnil he's 3. I also forgot to say that they wash brilliantly but mostly I just sponge them off.

HaventSleptForAYear · 11/05/2009 12:53

waterproof world are very good, they have v. good customer service (they phone you if something is not in stock and they have good advice about sizes).

Delivery is v. fast too.

We have the dungarees plus coat - the dungarees have had loads of wear but often in winter the DS just wear their normal coats over the top (for warmth).

The "kiba" dungarees were worn every day for 2 consecutive years (every day apart from boiling hot days) by DS1 and after a year on DS2 they are finally starting to look a little tatty but are fully functional.

Galava · 11/05/2009 12:57

Togz are very good.
