Why do people spend loads on wedding shoes?

Only asking as I just got a pair from Faith that were £45, incredibly comfy and stunning. As they are only going to be worn for one day, I am really happy that I got these and not a £120 pair like my sister had! Or my friend who got Jimmy Choos! I understand the logic on spending a lot on a pair of shoes that you wear regularly, but for one day?

well aren't you just fantastic and your sister is a fool!

schneebly · 07/05/2009 14:49

I paid £30 for my wedding shoes - couldn't see them for my dress anyway and when else am I going to wear ivory shoes?

however I did spend more on my wedding dress than I would spend on a dress normally because it is a special day after all...

alicecrail · 07/05/2009 14:53

Mine were a tenner and exactly the right colour/style and i still wear them.
I think women go into a bridal shop to find their dress, the assistant suggests some shoes to match (nothing special) and they think 'oh, yes these go lovely, jobs a good un' hand over £100 (or whatever) and don't have to worry anymore. There are also of course the ones that see it as a good chance to splash out. I mean, you spend a lot on the dress and only wear it once, why not the shoes as well?

It's not necessarily about how many wears you get out of them, otherwise it wouldn't be logical for anyone to spend money on a wedding dress either, as most people don't wear them again.

If your sister and your friend can afford special shoes for their special day, why not?

sleepwhenidie · 07/05/2009 15:00

I spent a lot but they were Gina sandals and they have been worn quite a few times since - I always said I would have a pair of manolo blahniks for my wedding day (the only part of my wedding I really thought about in advance, I never wanted the fairytale, big traditional thing) red if that was the pair I liked...in the event all of the Manolos that season had quite clumpy heels so were unsuitable but I love my gold sparkly Ginas!

flowerybeanbag · 07/05/2009 15:05

If I were getting married now, one of the few things I'd do differently is have some special shoes. Christian Louboutins perhaps, or Jimmy Choos. I wasn't into shoes really when I got married, and we were on a very tight budget as well, but if it were now I'd splash out a bit I think.

BitOfFun · 07/05/2009 15:08

Mine were a fiver! Only wore them the once though (white stilettos), nobody could see them under my dress, and I wouldn't normally wear them. If you were your Ginas enough, they may prove better value, who knows?

mymatekate · 07/05/2009 15:12

I think the point I was trying to make is that you don't see the shoes under the dress, however wasn't thinking about the fact that some people might have a shorter dress or want their shoes as a feature...or the fact that some people can actually afford it!

My cousin just got married, and had a fantastic pair of handmade purple DMs - no-one knew until she showed them off at the reception.

SOLOisMeredithGrey · 07/05/2009 16:16

In the sale £7.00 bargain!

steamedtreaclesponge · 07/05/2009 16:17

Well you can get wedding shoes dyed if they're fabric - a friend of mine had Jimmy Choo's for her wedding and then changed the colour afterwards so she could carry on wearing them which I think is quite sensible

BlingDreaming · 07/05/2009 16:23

Mine were pink. They were hard to miss.

I was all set to rant about how it's not immoral to want pretty shoes just for yourself and because you can on your wedding day but then you came on again and seemed to understand!

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 07/05/2009 16:26

Mine were Gina's and new - they would have cost £295 (indeed that's what it said on the box) but I got them on ebay for £40

I was well chuffed

MerlinsBeard · 07/05/2009 16:26

see i wouldn't have spent £45 on them either!

Mine cost £8!

Tillyscoutsmum · 07/05/2009 16:32

Mine were red Jimmy Choos and I loved them. I got quite drunk and made sure I showed most of my guests at some point in the evening

TweetleBeetle · 07/05/2009 16:32

Well I spent a lot on mine, and although no-one saw them, I loved them. If you find some fab shoes that you love and odn;t cost a fortune great. But I didn;t get into debt over them and felt very special

Will one day get round to getting them dyed (if anyone knows a reputable company I could send them to!)

However far funnier was later on when dancing I had to take them off and had forgotten to take some comfy shoes so ended up wearing my timberlands!!!

FabulousBakerGirl · 07/05/2009 16:36

I got married nearly 10 years ago and could only find 2 pairs of shoes I liked in the whole of Bluewater. One pair were £49 but the stitching was too dark and the other pair were £12 and fit and matched perfectly. Bought the £12 pair (2 pairs as wrong size at first) and did feel a bit unsure as the dress and underwear weren't cheap but came to the conclusion it was mad to spend money for the sake of it.

nappyaddict · 07/05/2009 21:06

So they can strut around the bedroom in them afterwards with their sexy new expensive underwear aswell
