mothers of toddlers-what *do* you wear?

i want to look smart casual rather than just frumpy at least some of the time but it's not warm enough most days for dresses/skirts and bare legs and jeans don't suit me without heels as i'm small. my toddler is very hyper active so whatever i wear i have to be able to run about in. what do other people do?

Im short, 4ft 11 and most days wear jeans and a tshirt. I vary my jeans, either dark blue, black or even wear a pair of black cords from Next. Just smartens me up when needed.

I have a 3 yr old and a 2 yr old and im a sahm and I find it fine.

I tend to wear flats (I NEVER wore flat shoes pre kids..!)although some days wear heels BUT I can't always wear heels esp with ds as I can't run in them lol..! Goodness knows how posh spice does it .

Although once its warmer I tend to wear dresses/skirts or linen trousers.

HTH x

BTW,as big headed as it may sound...I do class myself as a yummy mummy... I always wear make up and my hair is always done..I guess in a way it makes me feel fine about wearing flat shoes.I feel glam elsewhere. x

I wear skinny jeans, and ballet pumps or gladiator sandals. And I try and wear a floaty tea dress over (patterened) and this hides food splatters, whilst looking feminine. (jacket-wise I wear either a full-skirted belted trench and scarf for a french look, or a tight tux jacket that also gives shape over my tea dress)

But for wet weather, well not as glamourous at all I am afraid. Usually boring straight leg jeans, or skinnies with either walking boots or converse, and than a lovely [ahem] practicle waterproof jacket with hood.

I also recently bought a hooded showerproof parka style thin jacket as a bloody alternative to the attractive waterproof (and I feel alot more feminine in this, even though it was like £20 from tesco)

my holy grail would be feminine shoes with a heel that are ALSO really comfy and practical enough to run after a toddler in. these types of shoes don't seem to exist...though i did have some funky biker boots with a chunky heel that worked for winter clothes.(jumper dresses or short skirts. yes, i think i'm a yummy mummy too...at least i want to be one!)

I agree it is really easy to do a practicle heel in winter, not so in summer! How about some chunky wedge sandals?

To be honest though, when I do see other mothers tottering around pushing a buggy and trying to control a toddler I do think they look a little bit silly. I know you are not suggesting the tottering kind of shoes, but you know what I mean (I can sprint after my 3 year old, and push the buggy in my gorgeous russel and bromley pumps and look cool. And leave the tottering mummys to look rather uncool)

Would El Naturalista shoes be feminine enough? They're extremely comfortable with chunky heels , great for running after toddlers.

just going to have a look at that website accesorizequeen, it looks great.
jewelsandgems i totally agree. i can't understand how anyone can totter with a toddler. it can't be any fun. you got to be able to run.

Well i have ds1(4), ds2(16months) and am 27 weeks pregnant and still wear heels and i do not totter!

Seriously its about a sensible heel - wedges work best for me and i like a sandal that has a strap across the top so it stays on. I can't be doing with sling backs as they always seem to fall off.

However i'm tiny - only 5ft - if i was taller i'd wear flats.

I do think i normally just dress how i always have - try to buy what suits me, is reasonably fashionable - i don't do 'mumsy'.

As long as it can go in the washing machine then its fine. I love white jeans which i know some people would think mad but hey they wash.

I wear ballet pumps and skinny jeans and a (easily washable and no iron) top. When it's warmer, dresses/skirts and birkenstocks.
