Eyebrow shape virgin at 39! What about eyelash tinting?

dippica · 03/05/2009 18:03

I have long-held fears about getting my brows shaped, but I think its about time I did something about them.

Is it the sort of thing that you have to keep doing every few weeks once you start?
And does the skin go bright red - how long does til it calms down again?

Also thinking about getting my lashes tinted before my holiday - what do we think?

I think I'm feeling rather old and grumpy, unkempt and a bit shabby round the edges, so fancy perking myself up with some treats.

Thanks

I'm an eyebrow shape virgin too! (33) Sorry can't help but watching with interest

get them threaded rather than waxed or tweezed. yes, upkeep is necessary, but depeneds on how thick and dark your hair is. i should have mine done every two weeks, but usually only do it once every three to four weeks. my friend who has very fair hair doesnt need it done more than once a month.

no idea about eyelashs, as i am blessed with dark ones

I've read about threading before - had thought it was for upper lip hairs etc - that's something else I'm going to have to tackle soon, but not just yet!!
Will have a chat to the salon to see how they do it. I so rarely spend money on this sort of thing (cue violins) I feel quite nervous about the whole thing!

I got a freebie eye lash dying and eyebrow shaping at the hairdressers.

It was great. Yes, your eyebrows are a bit pink afterwards but not for very long. More of a problem was the dye from the eyelash dying. I wiped my eyes before I left the saloon but in the 5 minutes it took to get home, the residual dye that is left had run and I looked like a panda. Thankfully I didn't see anybody I knew!

I didn't have a great deal off my eyebrows (the fashion is for fuller ones apparently) but I couldn't believe how neat it looked.

I need to go back but you don't have to go back that often if you are prepared to pluck the stray hairs that grow. The waxing gives a good shape which you can use as a guide.

Eyelash dye lasts about 6 weeks or longer but my hair seems to hold dye - I think 6 weeks is the recommended length between visits.

Give it a go - it doesn't make you look any different as such, just very neat and groomed.

I would like to try threading but nobody does it round here. It is supposed to be better (but probably more expensive too)!

You can tint your own eyelashes - buy a Dylash kit from a good independent chemist. Black is much the best (not blue or brown).

Use a pair of Tweezerman tweezers (with slanted ends) to tidy up stray hairs.

get it done in an indian salon and it will cost between 3 and five pounds/ get it done in debenhams, and it will cost 13 pounds.

I have never had my eyelashes tinted ao am watching with interest too. My friend years ago had it done blue/black and the remaining dye kind of stayed put, and it was a total disaster for her (this was like 10 years ago though, sounds like things have moved on since then)

Eyebrow-wise, I had mine shaped AGES ago and have just kept tweezing to that shape. Now I am older - 31 - I don't have the skinny brow look anymore, but because I have been tweezing for so long, my stray browns don't hardly grow back at all anymore. They are fair though, so I think fair people can get away with a much longer stint inbetween salon visits. I also use an eyebrow pencil in midbrown because as you get older, thicker darker brows are supposed to frame your face, and eyes, for a more flattering effect. [and I am all for that!]

dippica · 03/05/2009 20:06

Right will go for both - I think they probably don't do threading in the place nearest to me, but won't harm to ask.

Thanks all.

I had mine done yesterday (Fenwicks £14 ouch). Assumed she would just tidy up my quite thick eyebrows and define them. Unfortunately she didn't. Instead they are now pencil thin and I'm not sure I like them at all. Was a spur of the moment, out shopping, rare time to myself moment. Next time I'll do what I usually do and take ds shopping. That will stop me doing silly things. The threading was incredibly painful so I will add it to my try once only beauty treatments (waxing being the other).

BonsoirAnna · 05/05/2009 09:33

That's bad, MollieO, because thin eyebrows are not fashionable.

Try buying some eyebrow defining gel, or a little kit (Benefit does a nice one).

Eyelash tinting is brilliant - I have mousey hair and lashes to match and I tint them regularly, it makes a huge difference, esp on those days when I run out of the house without any makeup. I also shape my eyebrows and have been known to have them tinted too - was quite surprised how fab it looked, and not too "done" at all. I would add that I am otherwise a very low maintenance kind of woman, not someone who is able to spend ages in a salon (although I would love to).

MollieO · 05/05/2009 10:13

Think I'll wait until they grow back! Should only take a month but still a bit annoying.
