it's a bit quick for your body to change shape so drastically - any chance it could be water retention? pmt?

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 03/05/2009 11:53

The usual reason for this is that when people go to the gym they think they deserve a treat and end up eating more calories then they have burned.

Also 2 weeks not a lot, I wouldn't expect to see a noticable difference for 4-6 weeks.

littleboyblue · 03/05/2009 11:54

Don't you tone out before you tone in iyswim?

whoingodsnameami · 03/05/2009 11:54

I am being careful about what I eat, I seem to have grown dramatically around my middle I have never suffered water retention before.

If you need to lose weight, then you are better off losing at least some weight before going to the gym as often as you are as you are quite possibly building muscle already on top of the fatty tissue.

whoingodsnameami · 03/05/2009 11:55

Trust me, nothing is more toned, its all just flab, and I dont know where its come from.

They weighed, measured me ect, then designed a programme for my needs, most of what I do is using the calorie burning machines, like the treadmill and cross trainer, until I lose the weight my programme does'nt involve much weights/toning equiptment.

whogodsnameami honestly keep on with it (even tho personally I would have added some weights to your programme) and if you are eating sensibly as well you WILL see some changes.

Can I be cheeky and ask how much weight you want to lose?

2 weeks is nothing.

whoingodsnameami · 03/05/2009 12:02

Well, I am almost 12 stone, but a size 12/14 (until now so I think I would like to lose 2 stone, as when I was 10 stone befor I was a size 10, I must have heavy bones as my ideal weight is apparently 9,6, I would look skeletal if I ever got to that weight.

I honestly think bodies go into shock for a while when we introduce something new - retaining water, conserving themselves - it will probably all drop off all at once in a few weeks

ShowOfHandsNoLongerKissesKunes · 03/05/2009 12:05

I do think some weights might sit nicely alongside CV work but 2 weeks is no time at all. Keep going, honestly, it'll improve and you'll feel great.

whoingodsnameami · 03/05/2009 12:06

Ooooh I hope so, I always drink alot of water anyway, as I dont like anything else, but it has increased quite alot since going to the gym, I drink a litre while I am there, so now I would say I drink close to 3 litres a day, is that too much.

Oh yes you should definitely doing some weights as well . does your gym do classes? I would drop one of the cardio sessions and add something like a bodypump class. I would also drop one of your own motivation cardio sessions and add something like spinning, bascially because you never work as hard on your own as you do being shouted at.

(you sound exactly the same weight and dress eize as me - 5'9" and I'm very pleased with my figure at the moment lol).

Also do a food diary to make sure you are eating as healthily as you think you are and be careful with food portion sizes.

You will see results if you perserve. It took you longer than 2 weeks to put the 2 stone on!

whoingodsnameami · 03/05/2009 12:13

Thanks liba, I do a few weights, the leg presses and the arm one (I forget whats its called now) also some exersices like crunches and planks. I was actually thinking of joining the kick boxing class, or one called bums, thighs and hips.

ShowOfHandsNoLongerKissesKunes · 03/05/2009 12:16

Classes are good. Free weights better than machines and working with your own body is great so things like the plank or using an exercise ball, all help with core stability which is a good way of targetting your middle.

You can drink too much water. How are you drinking it? Do you sip a bit at a time or drink a lot in one go?

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 03/05/2009 12:19

as showofhands has said ditch the machines and get the fitness instructors to show you how to use the free weights, ignore all the chicken leg men hanging around them.

kick boxing classes are great cardio and personally I would rate them over bums thighs and hips because with kick boxing you would see the same results as bums thights and hips AND it's cardio.

whoingodsnameami · 03/05/2009 12:21

I drink it fairly slowly, I know gulping it down is a bad idea, at the gym I have a few sips after each exersice, then I slow down in the afternoons, but come 7pm I get very thirsty and drink a pint every 1 and a half hours, but again not gulping it.

If you're getting thirsty, you're dehydrated which can have an effect on how you look/feel. Try spacing out drinking evenly through the day, keep a bottle of water on you and sip regularly.

Cardio box/kickboxing type classes are very good for the reasons libra details. Honestly, chat to an instructor and try some free weights a couple of times a week. And not little girly 2lb things that you see very skinny and fresh young things half heartedly waving about for 10 minutes before they go for a sauna, proper weights that work your muscles. Lose weight and tone up at the same time, resistance/weight work is very, very important especially after having children. A ladies only gym sounds lovely!

When I went to weightwatchers for a while it really semed to be the case that as people started to gain confidence and start going to the gym or to exercise classes they either stopped losing weight or put a little bit back on, for 2 or 3 weeks - think your metabolism goes into alarm mode to begin with, all agreed it was worth it in the long term.
