WHY do all the tops and dresses in the shops require you to show the tops of your arms and your armpits?

Whhyyyyyyyyyyyyyy I hate the tops of my arms, get disgustingly sweaty in these ridiculous cap sleeved (? i think that's what they're called) tops - but I can't see anything else!! I end up wearing long sleeved tops under EVERYTHING - is it just me?

Oops I appear to feel so strongly about this I posted twice, sorry.

Because arms are sexy!

peggotty · 02/05/2009 21:20

Ha ha! depends on the arms surely, anna! Dinner lady arms are perhaps only found sexy by a minority!

Jaquelinehyde · 02/05/2009 21:21

I hate this as well. It really pisses me off.

FatGirlThin · 02/05/2009 21:22

Oh, I posted on other thread but I said...

No it isn't just you. I am a size 12 and have terrible bingo wings. I think part of the problem is because dresses with sleeves can look a bit frumpy? I love dresses but am gradually (still a bit in denial) coming to the conclusion that they just don't suit me
Also, why has everything got such skinny bloody straps? I am a 32FF and my bras all have industrial width straps (even the pretty ones) and therefore look crap with any type of vest type top (which I shouldn't wear with my bingo wings but still...) and I have the same problem with dresses

Oh I feel better after that

FrannyandZooey · 02/05/2009 21:23

how about a little short sleeved shrug? a cotton one is not hot and it can give your outfit a bit of oomph also

EvilDragonWoman · 02/05/2009 21:25

It's obviously so the shops can sell more shrugs and other shoulder concealing accessories to us poor sods who don't have nice arms. And also it may be a conspiracy on behalf of depilating creams/waxes/etc companies.

jenwyn · 02/05/2009 21:28

Not just you.I have had extensive breast surgery that took away my breast and left a sunken scar that runs from centre of my chest to under my arm .Muscle was also taken away and a lovely 'dog ear' left behind that flaps unbecomingly under my arm.
So what with a dint ,a gap and a flap I cannot wear anything 'summery' at all. Even today I am in an long sleeved crew neck top.

themoon66 · 02/05/2009 21:29

God this so true.... I went through a dozen shops the other saturday going 'nope, no sleeves'

fishie · 02/05/2009 21:38

it costs more to put sleeves in, esp nice fitted ones.

kalo12 · 02/05/2009 21:39

so that you will buy a jacket too

EvilDragonWoman · 02/05/2009 21:42

But haven't you also noticed a distinct lack of any nice summer jackets? Most seem double-breasted and I just look like I'm going to burst the buttons off if there's a colder day!

Caz10 · 02/05/2009 21:43

that was me today themoon66 - just walked around the shops looking at the sleeves (or lack of) on everything. Hadn't thought of a shrug/cardi - but that's more money isn't it?!

BonsoirAnna · 03/05/2009 09:21

Wear a cardigan - there are lots of lovely cardigans in the shops!

mrsmaidamess · 03/05/2009 09:24

OR buy a blouse and wear it open as a jacket. I got a lovely white fitted lacey one (sounds awful, looks great) in Next yesterday.

Also ladies, folk are far too self obsessed to worry about/notice the state of your upper arms.

JustCallMeGoat · 03/05/2009 09:26

this is why i never throw clothes away. you cannot trust the vagueries of fashion. or you could just accept the fact that not everyone is examining you in great detail and you might get away with the bingo wings... until you come to wave goodbye adn take out anyonen in a 1m radius.

naomi83 · 03/05/2009 11:25

great plains here have quite a lot of lovely tops with longer sleeves, great for plain tops
simple be
monsoon

ThingOne · 03/05/2009 13:24

I hate them too. I have fair skin so need to be covered up or I spend my entire time slapping on sun cream. I don't like the naked look on me at all.

HecatesTwopenceworth · 03/05/2009 13:52

oh I know how you feel!

I'm a big lass (bloody big!) and it drives me crazy that EVERYTHING atm is sleeveless, split sleeves, or ends just where your bingo wings are on show.

AND tops that are to the waist - well, if you had one! - when anyone who's big will tell you that that is the MOST unflattering thing in the world! Hideous, really it is.

Sleeves to the elbow and tops that go down as far as the hips at least. THAT'S what you need when you are bigger.

Buda · 03/05/2009 13:55

Hey Hecate - how is everything going? Are you recovered from the surgery? Are the results what you hoped for? (Sorry for hijack everyone!)

And I so agree re the sleeves!

HecatesTwopenceworth · 03/05/2009 14:09

yup. Bit sore today but doing well. Am losing steadily - will speed up as i lose it and get more mobile. have lost 15lb in 4 weeks.

Lmccrean · 03/05/2009 14:19

I hate my arms too, but have got a few long sleeved, low neck-line tops in dorothy perkins (2 for £12) to go under short sleeved tops.

Having bother finding nice jackets tho...

Buda · 03/05/2009 15:52

Glad you are doing so well Hecate. 15lbs is great!
