What's the best haircut for a 6-year-old girl with fine, thin hair?

My dd's been a bit under the weather for a few months with anaemia and possibly a thyroid problem. As a result her hair has reduced in thickness by at least half. Previously it was waist-length but I've cut it to shoulder length. As it's still thinning somewhat I'd like to take her to the hairdresser to get it cut properly.

It's very fine, slightly sparse on her head now but not dreadfully thin. And it's poker straight. She fancies a chin-length bob - would that work?

My DD's hair, which had been long to her shoulders, was very thin too. I suspect she was pulling it out..anyway, we had it cut to a chin length bob all the same length and it's really nice.

No need to tie it up if she doesn't want to, a hairband and she's good to go. It suits her too and she really likes it (it helps that there was a bit of a fashion for it in her school year with several pals doing similar.

Her hair is very fine btw but has thickened up since having it cut. hth

Thanks for that Clary - would you happen to have any pictures of it? I'd like to see how it looks on thin hair. I can only find pictures online of girls with very thick hair in a chin-length bob style.

Not sure how to put a piccy on...

Just had a look and she nearly always wears it with a headband, not sure if that puts you off!

How do I show you pic then?

You can set up a profile on here or you can email me? ruth.blue @ btinternet.com ?

Perhaps you could consider one of those cute little elfin cuts, they look really neat for thinner hair.

Have emailed you a couple of pix

Just had a peek, thanks, it looks lovely! It's a bit more wavy than dd's hair which is totally dead straight. But that's the length I was thinking of.

I think the waviness is deceptive - it's more just that it's so flyaway. But straighter hair would look ever better.

My dd looks best with a bob along her chin line, quite a bit shorter at the back. It looks very sassy, but has to be done well, and you have to think about what to do with the fringe. dd has a bob because she has very fine hair that turns into a haystack at the slightest provocation. It looks much healthier and thicker when it is shorter. She has very straight fair to brown hair.

Thanks for these replies. We've got an appointment at the hairdresser tomorrow afternoon!

At the moment dd has a side parting, I don't think I'll get a fringe cut in as it will reduce the thickness of the main hair and having had one before I found it a pain to trim and eventually grow out.

Do you think all one length is better than layered at the back?

Anyone else got any pics?

a concave bob would look great, thats what my daughter has with very fine blonde hair and looks great i on the other hand look like i have been pulled through a hedte backwards

TsarChasm · 01/05/2009 11:22

A little bob and use some pretty slides or a hairband. Could also put it into sweet little bunches if you leave it chin length or just below.

Dd as fine straight hair. It takes some looking after. I have to blow dry it under for her or it dries all over the place and looks awful. Also after she's slept on it it needs attention. We struggle a bit with it at times.

TsarChasm · 01/05/2009 11:24

I wouldn't have layers for now. Keep it blunt and it'll look thicker.

Thanks everyone!

Maybe I'll change dd's picture in my profile after she gets it done.
