I've always wanted to do it because it looks so great and so "natural" but im worried about the costs... so tell me

  • can they do the (highlights) roots after youve done it once or do you have to do it all over again everytime?
  • so is it less expensive the second time round (roots)? How much less? half price?
  • how often do you have to do the roots? every month/month and a half like a color tint?

what should i know before doing this?

I gave up on them because they were too expensive. I had half a head each time, they do the whole hair not just the roots because they have to section off the hairs and foil them. You could always just have a quarter head done I suppose.

Each time I went the price seemed to go up by £20. I ended up paying £130 the last time I had it done and thought that's it, no more. So the next time I asked them to give me my natural colour, nearly fell off my chair when it came to £180. So now I'm mousey natural hair colour for ever more - or until I get courage to home dye. (I went to my local london salon so I'm sure they were ripping me off, you'll be able to find cheaper, but it is still a bit of a commitment).

oh gosh get a mate round and do it yourself

or mobile hairdressers are much much cheaper i believe

Wow that is a lot of money!! I did mine at home for £9.99! Not a nice as salon dyes, but I always do my hair to the same shade as dd's so noone suspects that it is dyed . One of my friend has the most beautiful highlights, but they are not natural ones, they are "bold statement" ones. Am very of them though!

i do a half head every time now, a whole head for first time, so that's cheaper. supposed to do it every 6weeks-2 months but i am definitely veering towards the 2 months end of that (could go a bit longer if you dont mind a bit of rootage). depends how blonde you are underneath as well (i am a natural mouse). i LOVE mine - am currently trying to make economies and was considering if i could give up being blonde (it costs about £100 but i tend ot go when the hairdressers have got special offers on) and decided it was the last thing that would go.....but yes once you've done it is hard to go back so have to be prepared for the ongoing expense. am thinking maybe either a) do MN haircut but keep going to salon for highlights or b) try home highlighting kit but think i would probably make a fairly rubbish job of it....

can you call some local colleges and have it done by students (supervised)?

mrsboogie · 04/05/2009 17:15

Jesus where do you guys live?? I get mine done for £75

chandellina · 04/05/2009 20:31

i live in London and I only pay £50 for a half head of highlights from an amazing colourist. You can also get something called a T bar in between times that i pay about £35 for. I go every 8 weeks or so.

it is a commitment but i consider it crucial!

i might be on some grandfathered rate because i've been going for so long, but if anyone is in the area, my guy's name is Jude and he is at the Works on Walworth Road, near Elephant & Castle.

and i have had my hair every colour possible over the years, done myself and at the salon, and i really think highlights are the best solution.

i've not tried some of the new kits they have out though, so maybe they do work!

chandellina · 04/05/2009 20:32

oh, and i have also paid £125 at places like Aveda, and they were definitely not worth it.

Jewelsandgems · 04/05/2009 21:38

I have a full head one time, then half next visit. My full head including cut with salon manager is £95, the half head inc cut is £80 so not that different.

I have my roots done every 10 weeks - sometimes 12 weeks and that is fine for me. I am a natural mouse too, so I do not have major routage. My hair is a bleach and a caramel shade, so the result is my hair is very very pale caramel/vanilla blonde but I love it, and love that my hair positively shimmers (especially on the lightest bits)

I would say go for it, you will look gorgeous and once you've started, you will want to continue to be that women.

My only advice? Do not do it yourself. Even if you go to the salon a few times do you know what shades you prefer and then try it yourself, that is better than just DIY first time. I personally would never DIY, but my highlights are very fine and I know my own attempt would be crap my comparison (plus DIY home kits do not contain as good quality bleaches/dyes, so you achieving your desired colour can be hit and miss)

There is a reason it is so expensive, because it takes the colourist bloody ages, so be prepared to be very bored, and get your appt as early as pos so you are not hungry and the hairdressers are at their most energetic. If you have appt at lunchtime you will be starving, and if you get one for late afternoon, the staff my be already in go slow mode)
