Mole removal.....How much????

VanillaPumpkin · 23/04/2009 21:36

I have a mole on my face that used to be small and dark like a beauty spot, but is now large and getting paler so looks more like a wart . I also discovered a dark HAIR growing out of it. I now want it off!!
I have already been referred to dermatology at the hospital who said it is normal and so they won't remove it. How much will I have to pay privately?
TIA.

Can't you just snip the hair and darken the mole slightly with a brow pencil?

VanillaPumpkin · 23/04/2009 21:48

I have snipped the hair and will continue to do that (face requires constant attention to eyebrows and waxing moustache anyway - goodness I sound attractive), but the mole is now raised too where it used to be flat.....It is ugly now.....

Oh and is on chin so I would smudge brow pencil right away....thanks for reply and ideas though

I had a mole removed in December from my lower lip- it cost around £400 privately. My insurance would have covered it, but I had used my limit for the year and wanted it done then, no later.

MamaG · 23/04/2009 22:31

can't you lie and say it goes scabby and bleeds sometimes?

mondaymonday · 24/04/2009 09:59

I had mine checked and it was said to be benign, but consultant said I could have it removed on nhs. I ended up chickening out because he said it may leave a bigger hole than the actual mole, and in some cases skin could react and go red permanently. I was told my subsequent that the risks of this were actually quite low and so I'm still undecided.

Anyone have experiences as to the results of mole removal?

vanilla I sympathise - I hate my facial mole, and am paranoid about photos etc that show that side of my face

McDreamy · 24/04/2009 10:05

Hi Vanilla!!

I would do what MamaG says and lie, it bleeds or it's painful but it sounds like you've already seen the dermatologist so maybe too late to go down that road. I wouldn't think your GP will remove it as it's on your face - I know DH wouldn't I have had a mole removed on my bra line as it was painful and would catch. I must admit I do have a small scar there which doesn't matter but it might if it had been on my face.

Sorry not much help but good to see your name come up

BigBellasBeerBelly · 24/04/2009 10:26

Out of interest, having been reading on other threads about the NHS and how they have to limit IVF and cancer drugs, and is that a good thing, and how it's all funded etc...

Is it really OK to lie about something in order to get a cosmetic procedure done for free? Especially given that if you tell them that it's bleeding/changing etc they will need to send it off to the lab to be checked to see if it's cancerous ie not just the procedure but further unnecessary and expensive tests as well?

I can see why it would be tempting, just interested to see if people really think this is absolutely fine.

BTW private may be a better bet for neat stitching etc if it's on your face. Some NHS people are excellent but you can't always be guaranteed the same result - the NHS will see it as primarily removing something that could harm you which is a different angle from it being cosmetic, although obviously the vast majority of them won't leave it looking a mess!

bigbellas that's a good point - apparently my MIL has persuaded her GP that her wrinkly eyelids are 'getting in the way of her eyesight' and is basically imo having an eyelift on the NHS. Apparently this is very very common amongst certain women of her age

BigBellasBeerBelly · 24/04/2009 11:11

ROFL @ eyelift!

Some GPs can be sweet talked very easily

Doesn't make it right though [frown]

SoupDragon · 24/04/2009 11:11

I would have it done privately as it's on your face. I've had a flat mole removed from my neck which has left me with an inch long scar line. Less noticable than the mole was but perhaps not what you want on your chin .I've also had raised moles removed from my back which have left flat red scars, like blotches. They may have faded to white now, I'm not sure. I don't look at my back often! Again, probably not what you'd want on your face.

SoupDragon · 24/04/2009 11:12

Actually, this reminds me that I want a couple more taken off my back where they are near my bra strap. My GP did the last ones.

Pawslikepaddington · 24/04/2009 11:14

I had a mole removed on my shoulder (huge and weeped frequently) and it has literally had about 200 mole babies since! I am now COVERED in them all over my shoulders and arms, and it has left a huge white scar. I also have one on my chin that has gone pale and hairy (I pluck my hair out of it , and tbh I am more worried about what it would look like if removed!

BigBellasBeerBelly · 24/04/2009 11:18

I have had mine done on NHS too where they were interfering with clothing - bra strap mainly. GP just whips them off in the surgery. Also a massive one when I was about 5, on my tummy, have a scar which is about 3 inches by one now having been stretched by pregnancy!

SoupDragon · 24/04/2009 11:20

We're like a bunch of Dalmatians!

steppemum · 24/04/2009 11:21

I had a mole on the side of my nose, (I often considered painting it gold instead of a nose stud My Dad offered to pay for it to be removed before my wedding. Gp refered me to a plastic surgeon because it was on my face. I think it cost about 500 pounds, but the result is amazing, no scar at all.

BigBellasBeerBelly · 24/04/2009 11:24

It is actually very difficult to get these things stitched up in a way which leaves no visible scarring - that is part of why the plastic surgeons get paid so much - if I had something on may face I would go private i reckon.

perma · 24/04/2009 11:32

I had a pale mole that was raised and on end of my nose (oh joy!) removed when I was 16 as felt very witchy and although left a pale scar it was 100 times better than the raised bump you could see in profile. I now have 2 moles on my face which I'm sure others wonder why I don't have removed but I kid myself they are just about ok as arguably in a beauty spot position (but maybe I just look like one of the ugly sisters - eek!). I agree that going private is a good idea as is on your face, but maybe it is less of an issue than you think - have you asked dh etc what they honestly think?

FlorenceAndtheWashingMachine · 24/04/2009 17:33

I have a pale mole right on the end of my chin and it makes me feel really witchy. I hate it, but I can't quite bring myself to spend £500 on getting rid of such a tiny thing. It will be the ultimate proof of my vanity if/when I do it.

I agree with you BBBB that we shouldn't lie to get treatment. A friend of mine had a mole on her cheek removed at her GP's surgery and had a really big 'crater' in her cheek, so that is more than enough to stop me being tempted to lie to my GP.

VanillaPumpkin · 26/04/2009 19:52

Hello ladies.

Sorry I totally forgot I posted this as I have been distracted by some nights out and researching a tent .

There are some good points made and some interesting stories thank you.

I think I expected it to cost about £300.

I really am a Dalmation as I am covered in dark moles on my arms etc (well over 100 on each). They don't bother me at all but this pale facial one does now....
DH isn't at all bothered and didn't even notice the hair...not sure he looks at me anymore .

My Mum and Dad (divorced) have on separate occasions both said, unprompted, that they would pay for me to have it removed though so I do think it is now getting ugly....

I will follow up the private route. Where do you start though??? Better start googling. I know there is a SK:N clinic near me.

Thanks again and sorry for my dissappearance.

I had three moles removed from my face last September. The biggest one was on my lip and had grown gradally over the years to the point where it was all I saw in the mirror. The other two weren't so bad but I thought I might as well have them off at the same time. They all had to be cut out because quite deep - I think you can sometime have them shaved off. It cost £850 and I have to say for me was worth every penny. The one on my lip has left a scar, which I was warned about, but much less noticeable than the mole. I got a letter from my GP and found a plastic surgeon through the local private hospital and made an appointment. I did have crossed wires with my GP though as he had actually writen the letter to another surgeon and had to amend it- so I would go first and ask your GP for a referral and see what he/she suggests.

VanillaPumpkin · 28/04/2009 18:32

Great, thank you. I will make an appointment.
