HELP! I don't want to spend all summer in linen trousers!!!!

Thanks to pregnancy I now have awful (really awful) varicose veins. I was hoping they would improve once ds was born but they haven't. There is no way I can wear anything above the knee and tbh honest I can't get away with anything that's not calf (sp?) length.

I'm really gutted about how they look but hey ho all I can do is try and dress appropriately. Please help me find nice summer clothes

I haven't spotted any nice long skirts Riven. The only place i've seen any are Next and they seem a bit "mumsy/middle age"

I'm did wonder if the maxi dress has had it's day?

the maxi dress has certainly not had its day but is alive and well and rocking out on the 70s trend (a key look for S/S09, dahling)

and I spotted some fab long flowy skirts, vaguely hippyish, a bit earth mother, but nice nonetheless in Primarche the other day - £12!!

don't ever wear linen trousers, not until you really are middle aged, say I.

MrsMattie · 23/04/2009 17:11

Maxi dresses are everywhere and because they are no longer 'bang on trend' and have become acceptable everyday wear, there are loads more styles and choices.

Cropped leggings under short summery dresses?

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 23/04/2009 17:13

I've just bought a pair of black stretch cotton cigarette (think Audrey Hepburn) cropped trousers (calf/ankle depending on height/length) from M and S for £18 today.

MrsMattie · 23/04/2009 17:14

Yes, was going to say cigarette pants / capri pants too, actually@Laurie. A good look.

Amandoh · 23/04/2009 17:27

LetThemEatCake I generally tend to agree with your comments on here and always love the clothes you link to but completely disagree with you when you say linen trousers are for the middle aged.

The second look here is very wearable and most definitely not reserved for the over 45s.

I suppose, like anything, it depends how you wear them. A starched, straight legged pair worn with a shapeless beige knit is always going to be ageing but a loose wide legged pair worn with a bright vest or t-shirt would look fine on anyone.

Ok, maybe not anyone.

AnyFucker · 23/04/2009 19:30

oi, LTEC, I also want to pull you up on your linen trouser comment!

middle-aged my arse

I think the kind of linen trousers you get from such as Anne Harvey are horrid

but I buy mine from River Island and Miss Selfridge every yr and they are trendy and cool with a skinny vest and Birkies/flipflops

toffeeapple · 23/04/2009 19:33

I'm 33 (with varicose veins) and I consider myself to dress smartly, and I LOVE linen trousers.
I can't find a pair to fit me though as my legs are too long.
I would LOVE to find a pair that's not too seethrough with longer length (34).
I think they can look amazing.
But otherwise I tend to go for long white skirts or mid calf trousers.
I've just bought some skinny white jeans from Topshop they're quite summery (looking, obviously too hot for the south of France but great for here)

ConnorTraceptive · 23/04/2009 20:02

Thanks everyone

I'm really pleased that the maxi dress is still an option as I saw a really nice one in H&M yesterday.

Will also have a look at cigarette/capri pants too.

I hate Maxi dresses but find myself very drawn to that Dotty P's one. However at 5' 2" I think it would be dreadful on me.

Does anybody have a link to the cigarette pants please?

LetThemEatCake · 23/04/2009 20:13

sorry guys, just my opinion. Think it is a Sydney thing. Linen trousers have a certain je ne sais blah over there, am sure they are perfectly acceptable on the under 45s on these sunny shores however.

But personally, I just don't see why anyone would wear them - or any trouser for that matter - when there are so many pretty frocks to be had la dee da di daaaaaah ....

Amandaoh - how's your pg? My bump is embarrassingly large for only 18 weeks!

Anyfucker - always a pleasure to see you on a thread, as always your moniker made me guffaw in a completely puerile way.

FrannyandZooey · 23/04/2009 20:15

toffeeapple try la redoute for long trouser lengths
m+s also good

AnyFucker · 23/04/2009 21:14

ooh ta LTEC

you are forgiven, my child, for your blatant anti-middle-age-ism

Amandoh · 23/04/2009 21:33

LetThemEatCake ~ I'm not pregnant. Thinking about it as I'd love to have a girl. I have three boys and a stepson so feel a bit outnumbered at times. Girly things are so sweet. I'd love to buy something pink for a change.

LetThemEatCake · 23/04/2009 22:01

oh feck. I'm having a shocker. Thought you were pregnant with an unexpected 3rd??? Who was that?? Definitely a Style & beauty regular.

Dunno what I'm having this time ... have got one of each so am going for the surprise!

Go on, get pregnant. Girls are fun.

AnyFucker · 23/04/2009 22:06

LTEC, go stand in the corner !
