'Smart-casual' - does this include jeans?

I have always assumed that jeans are not 'smart-casual' wear but from a conversation with a colleague today about a training course we are going on next week, she obviously does.

Does it or does it not include jeans?

My understanding is that it doesn't include jeans.

YanknCock · 22/04/2009 15:41

I wouldn't have thought jeans would be included in 'smart-casual', no.

I would say not, but then there are those trouserish/jeans that hover on the boundaries - so no to obvious blue jeans type jeans - when it comes to twill sort of like jeans, I think it depends how smart the rest of the outfit is. I used to work in a smart/casual office and that was the philosophy I used.

woodenchair · 22/04/2009 15:48

I wouldn't wear blue jeans, but if I was feeling cheeky, I push it and might wear black.

I think smart casual is a lot more casual than it was 10 years ago

JosieMiller · 22/04/2009 15:48

no

CMOTdibbler · 22/04/2009 15:51

No - black jeans (that are really black) at a push. More of a black trousers and a jumper sort of thing

Ceebee74 · 22/04/2009 15:54

Glad I hadn't got hold of the wrong end of the stick.

Am planning to wear bog-standard black work trousers and a smart t-shirt. Tbh as I am currently on mat leave I am quite excited about wearing something other than jeans (I need to get out more don't I??)

I think it depends on the situation - I have worn my denim skirt for some "smart casual" occasions and not felt out of place. I agree with woodenchair - the "rules" are much more relaxed nowadays.

My mum says "smart-casual" means "iron your jeans".

That's for parties, tho.
