Flaky scalp

smugmumofboys · 21/04/2009 16:12

I have to accept that my scalp is flaky and occasionnally itchy. I don't know if it's full-blown dandruff or just stress-related (my hairdresser suggested the latter).

I've tried Head and Shoulders and, whilst it does work, it strips the (dyed) colour from my hair. It's too harsh, basically.

Any gentler, colour-friendly solutions. No particular budget restrictions.

Thank you.

T-gel?

look for the ingreident SLS or sodium lauryl sulfate it's an industrial chemical used to clean oils and is in probably most high street brands.

it's probably not doing you any favours. Waitrose do a good range of natural and organic type shampoos or ask at your local health shop.

If it's itchy too, it's probably psoriasis. Betnovate scalp application on prescription is v.good.

I have suffered from this for years and after trying EVERYTHING just got some stuff called 'Elave' with no SLS/SLES in it. Much less itch/flake/druff after only using it once.

It wasn't too pricey either.

My DH has similar issue. He has never had it diagnosed properly but ime with skin conditions I would say it is likely to be psoriasis. He also occasionally gets it in his eyebrows and is really sore

Head & Shoulders makes his worse too. We treat particularly sore patches with aloe vera gel - really nice anti-inflammatory and very healing. I have tried various aromatherapy blends but nothing having long term effect. I am now insisting he gets proper diagnosis because I have heard that light therapy for example is particularly beneficial.

Thanks everyone.

My dad has very bad psoriasis so I suppose it's possibly that. Funny, that had never crossed my mind.

I'll look into the Elave stuff, thanks for the tip.

It just looks so horrible with flakes on the shoulders of clothes, and me so darned stylish too.

Elvive by lorel is great, I have this problem too and found other shampoos really harsh, this one does not feel like it strips my hair. But if i ever run out and change to a new shampoo withing a few washes my head starts to feel itchy again and i scratch.

My sister is a hairdresser and says I have a nervous dispossion.

Thanks for the tip. I'll look into it!

Aveda Scalp Benefits shampoo and conditioner are very effective and smell lovely but pricey.
