Teach me how to dye my hair please!

I have just past shoulder length frizzy curly hair. Sort of dark rat in the winter changing to a lighter mouse in the summer, if we have one. I recently re-discovered my straighteners and am loving them. However, with my newly straight and floppy hair, you can see all the grey streaked through it. So, I think it's time to get out the dye.

I have never dyed my hair before, except for one notable occasion when I dyed it black (I'm very fair skinned) and it went pink. I also don't do hairdressers due to being a scaredy wimp and severe lack of funds.

So, imagine I'm standing in the hair aisle in Boots. What do I pick up and what do I do with it?

Ta (winning smile)

If I were you I'd start with a semi permenant colour. something that washes out in a few washes, to see if you like the colour.

sorry, pc misbehaving. I'll have a look and see if I can find any examples.

something like this

I like the Boots own brand semis as they match to their permanent ones. Thus, if you like the colour, you can just pick up the other one.

For permanent, I like Garnier Belle Colour - goes on easily and stays nice

I can see four different bottles on that picture = complicated! So what happens if I try it, cock it up and have to spend six weeks looking like an arse. People will laugh...

  • do not use in white bathroom

  • do not use white towels

my mother still hasn't shut up about it and it was 8 years ago

they give pretty good instruction on the pack for the most part, for your length of hair you may need 2 packs depending on how thick your hair is.

it's also a good idea to rub some vaseline on your forhead by the hairline to stop it dying your skin up the and making you look decidedly odd

slackbladder, get some head and shoulders shampoo at the same time. It will strip the colour from your hair if you hate it.

LOL I spent many an hour checking my mother's ears for dye, hence my fear I asked her for help but she says I don't need to get on the dyeing treadmill just yet. Very helpful...

I have nine hairs and a nit so only one packet probably Right, will go and peruse. I feel slightly more confident...sort of...

Just be aware that shop colours will cover your grey for about two washes before fading out to nothing. Grey is a bogger to keep dye on. That's why I do a grey disguising tactic with blonde highlights instead.
