Graduation ceremony dress - can anyone help me to find one?

I am graduating at the end of June and I need a long (at least calf-length), plain black dress, preferably with a scoop or v-neck, and with either a long sleeve or sleeveless. The only ones I can find are not really suitable for a daytime event - there are plenty of evening-y, satiny, cleavage-baring ones, but no formal daytime ones! I am planning to wear it with flat shoes (less chance of me tripping over the robes!) and a small black clutch bag, if I can find one. I realise that it will be very difficult to get a long black dress at this time of year, but has anyone seen anything that might do me?

I have ordered the black maxi dress from Boden, but am worried it will be too summery, and the jersey material might be a bit shiny, so am going to keep looking. I have googled, but can only find goth/evening wear!

Can anyone help? Am getting a bit desperate now...

At least at Glasgow you don't get belted on the bonce with John Knox's hat, like we did at Edinburgh ... Wink

You guys have to sing in Latin though ... :-P

No you don't have tp sing in Latin! Although your degree certificate is in Latin

Agree with all the advice on simple clothing. Dress or skirt doenst have to be calf length, although mini might look odd. Knee length is fine

Go for simple jewellery too. Just earrings or simple necklace. The hood and gown don't need competiton

It will be very hot. Yes even in Glasgow. Gown is heavy

I work in a University and am involved in graduations. Despite the fact that somewhere deep in our regulations it states that female graduates should wear a white blouse and black skirt, this is NEVER adhered to. The vast majority of people look like they are going to a society wedding! I love wandering round the campus during graduation week looking at all the style!

As part of my role, I need to wear a gown too, and the people who hand out the gowns always have a good supply of sturdy pins and are able to pin the hood to the gown so it sits perfectly.

From my experience, the best bit of advice is to put plenty of thought into your shoes and make sure you can walk comfortably in them. I've seen our Chanceller and Vice-Chancellor catch quite a few females who almost fell at their feet in 6 inch heels!

Nope, I used to work at the University of Glasgow and helped out at Graduations, and they definitely do. Check this out.
