Can I wear this dress to a ball?

I am helping to organise a charity ball in a month's time.

I was going to wear the dress I got married in - not a traditional wedding dress - a floor length Amanda Wakeley silk job, with a wee tail.

It has just occurred to me, that as I will be running around doing stuff all evening, then a shorter dress may be more practical.

So, can I wear this dress to a ball? - The plain red, not spots [http://www.bravissimo.com/products/clothing/dresses-and-skirts/bravissimo/bc40-details.aspx?colour= Ruby+Red red dress]]

I am 5'7", blonde hair/blue eyes, 36D, Size 14, chunky of thigh and have a 7 months post-partum tum, which was never flat anyway.

And IF the consensus is that I can wear it to the ball - then point me in the direction of some accessories - especially shoes and cardi/shrug/top. I am not comfortable in very high heels (history of broken ankle and smashed knee), but can cope with a couple of inches.

I need inspiration, I really am a jeans/hoody/Converse dresser, currently accessorised by mashed breadsticks and banana !

OK - yes you can wear to a ball. Give me five mins to accesorise you...

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 18/04/2009 21:15

it's cocktail length though - is it not full length at this ball then?

If not formal then it's lovely

Lizzylou · 18/04/2009 21:15

I love that dress, it looks very flattering and a lovely colour.
Will other women be in full length Laura Ashley type ball gowns??
I think it could work.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 18/04/2009 21:16

If it is black tie then I think no you can't. Sorry cos is a great dress.

Rafaella · 18/04/2009 21:20

it's a gorgeous dress and something you could wear many times but for a ball women mostly wear full length dresses so if I was you'd I'd go for the AW dress as you probably won't get many opportunities to wear it. Why not get the other dress anyway - it's a classic style so won't date and then you can make up your mind at the last minute. As for shoes (I also have smashed knee so know the feeling), try and find platforms or chunky wedges so you get the height without the pain.

I love this - before my little one arrived I was working as a personal shopper. Any more help needed, please ask...

NOT black please. Black kills all colours dead- and in the words of T*S makes pink or red just look trashy.

Go for a neutral shade like silver or gold. Or even a clash like purple/violet/royal blue would look great with purple shoes.

BikeRunSki · 18/04/2009 21:58

Thank you folks. I agree that I should wear floor length, but that may not be so good on the practicality stakes.
Also agree abotu not black and red - it was my school uniform and I have a horror of it! - and I also think it is the quickest way of looking cheap!

I think I may get it anyway, as it is so rare that I find anything girly that I love! (and because it is Bravissimo, would fit!) I may be on SMP but I havn't had anything new apart from maternity clothes, glasses and Primark T's for - ooh about 9 months + 7 months .

Now then PolkSaladLucie - could I wear silver with it? I have a wee silver bag that I love - or is red and silver too Christmas-ey? How about same colour accessories ?

I'd go for silver- or purple. Unlikely youwould get a perfect match for that shade and all the same shade can look a bit as if you have tried too hard.

There are some lovely coloured around att he m- have a look at Dune.

Clure · 19/04/2009 18:30

You said you have a nice silver bag, think silver would look nice and dressy. how about these sandals, they're not too high?

BikeRunSki · 19/04/2009 20:43

Those sandals - my immediate reaction is "Bollywood Bling" - but then I live in Converse and MBTs, so my opinion of dressy shoes is not very sophisticated! But they are not too pricey, so could be worth a gamble. Thank you ladies.

yeah sorry they are slightly bling like.
Are these less so but still dressy?

or these if you are able to do wedges
