can anyone find me the perfect pair of jeans - please?

I desperately need some new jeans but can't find a pair which either fit or flatter

I used to go for Gap long and lean but they've changed the cut and it doesn't work on me anymore

I'm 45, 5'7, size 12 with "sturdy" thighs, slim(ish) waist and more-marshmallow-than-I-would-like stomach after 3 kids ...

I don't want skinny jeans (I wore drainpipes as a teenager so they fail my "not if I wore it the first time" rule), I don't want low-rise as it doesn't do anything for my tummy and a lot of cuts which fit my legs are way too big round the hips/waist

So far I've tried Gap, M&S, White Stuff and even Boden without success - I don't like or have much time for shopping so would love any suggestions please?

I really like River Island for jeans
here

Indith · 15/04/2009 19:06

Miss Selfridge are surprisingly good for jeans. I have some from there that button at the sides which cunningly avoids the muffin top created by the jeans button digging in to the baby flab. I know it is an odd sort of shop for anyone past the age of 15 but seriously, they do some fantastic jeans.

duckyfuzz · 15/04/2009 19:09

Like you I can't get on with whitestuff or gap jeans but find that M&S autograph weekend are good, 'normal' rise! also monsoon jeans tend to be good too

dexter73 · 15/04/2009 19:16

I like Next jeans.... makes a quick exit!!

mimsum · 15/04/2009 19:20

I don't think I've gone into either a River Island or Miss Selfridges for about twenty years - but I'm willing to give them a try - will the Miss Selfridges shop assistants give me the evil eye it was my favourite shop when I was 15 [sigh]

Are M&S autograph a different cut from 'normal' M&S jeans then? the normal ones are way too big at the waist

thanks for suggestions so far

hmm - have had a look at both river island and miss selfridge websites and they're not quite what I'm after ... I don't want ripped, skinny, decorated, kickflare etc

I'm happy to spend a fair bit for the right pair so am not on a tight budget

Thanks for this thread mimsmum - I'm a similar size and shape (and age) and I need help too!

I've lost a bit of weight over the last year, but I'm still wearing the old jeans.

I was shopping today and my jeans looked awful and kept falling down.

So I picked up a pair in Asda, but now I've got them home they don't look right at all.

Oh dear

Are Next jeans not the done thing then..?

Jewelsandgems · 15/04/2009 19:33

You know what, I think your not wearing it if you wore it first time rule is maybe the thing that needs to be changed! Your legs will prob will great in skinny jeans (really shows off firm thighs) and it is such a easy to wear look. Why not just try some on? A friend of mine had always swore off skinnies fearing she was too old, I forced to try some on, and now she has more pairs than me!

My personal favouite jeans right now are from Zara, they are very flattering.

Doodle2U · 15/04/2009 19:35

I've got same problem - size 16 however.

Shoshe · 15/04/2009 19:37

M&S brilliant jeans flattering an sooooo comfortable.

mimsum · 15/04/2009 20:04

trust me, I don't look good in skinnies any more - my thighs are just far too muscular .. and those m&s jeans are sadly too big around the waist

any more suggestions please?

was going to say white stuff but saw that you've vetoed that

Tillyscoutsmum · 15/04/2009 20:07

Have you tried New Look Hula jeans ?

I am a similar shape and they are the most flattering I have found. The denim is quite thin so they don't last a massive amount of time, but they're £10 a pair, so can't complain

french connection

Tesco. As well as doing some awful jeans they've recently got a very nice, flattering style in. I've had loads of compliments since getting some. £18 a pair.

suggy · 15/04/2009 20:30

I like uniqlo jeans. Have some straight leg ones - denim is to die for - better quality for price than anything I have found. Legs not long enough for me though - their 32inch leg just not up to it. But... worth a try
Also got husband a pair and they look and fit as well as Levis/Gap at half the price !

sonervous · 15/04/2009 21:47

These are fab Next

kettlechip · 15/04/2009 21:53

You sound like my body double and I love Seven for all Mankind jeans, size 30" fits like a dream. Maybe try some in a store and then look on ebay for bargains (but beware of fakes.) They are so worth the money, they last for ages and wash well. I'm always getting comments on them.

Also just bought these (and wearing them as I type) from Oasis which are really flattering and a lot cheaper -

Aefondkiss · 15/04/2009 21:58

great plains and/or french connection might be worth a try, I always thing GP is grown up version of fc - but the clothes are usually a good fit for the price.

Aefondkiss · 15/04/2009 21:59

I have new look jeans, I don't like them - denim feels hard and scratchy after a lot of wear imho.

TsarChasm · 16/04/2009 08:52

I really like the look of those Next jeans in sonervous' link, but they seem to be sold out in 12's and 14's.

MissisBoot · 16/04/2009 08:57

I recently bought some levis 'high waisted' and they are a lovely fit - they are in a dark wash and I've had lots of compliments since wearing them.
