Walking Sandals

I am going backpacking in Colombia for 3 weeks in June/July. Currently I only have normal flip flops which are great for the beach and pool but not so great for longer distances. I want some sort of sandal that I can wear for everyday walking (with a big backpack). The ones that I have managed to find look comfy but geeky. I will wearing them with casual skirts. So can anyone help me find a comfy but not geeky pair of sandals that will keep me going for 3 weeks?

Can't you get a pair of Birkenstocks?

I want something quite secure and forgot to mention that I don't want anything to go between my toes because as some point I have to wear socks (when we go through a bit of forest). I know: socks and sandals , has to be done though!

Hm, define geeky? I've had two pairs of Merrell walking sandals in the past, very very comfortable, ideal for proper walking, but I suspect they qualify as geeky. One pair are like this; can't find a picture of anything that looks like the navy ones (they're slightly less geeky, to my eye at least).

tbh if i were backpacking i'd be a lot more concerned about comfort than style, 3 weeks of blisters doesn't sound like a plan for a relaxing holiday personally i don't think the merrell ones look that bad, and i don't think birkies are all they're cracked up to be around these parts, but i've already been slapped down when i suggested them before. fair enough the merrells might not pass muster in new york - but colombia? get proper sandals. merrells are the biz, comfiest shoes i've ever owned.

The link that you gave are the type that I have found on the internet. Yes, they are the geeky ones . However, the more I look at them the comfier they seem. I might just have to get some.

I had a pair of Keen Venice sandals 2 years ago and they are wonderful. v. comfortable (don't rub at all)and although the shape is geeky the colours are lovely, they are nmachine washable and will last for years. I was quite happy to wear them with a dress or shorts going out for casual meals in the evening.

There are loads in the sale on the landsend website.

I wore these all the time last summer. I didn't exactly go trekking in them but I'm on my feet most of the time at work & they are very comfortable & not so geeky as some.

MuffinToptheMule · 11/04/2009 15:27

Thanks for your help. I've found a few that I like which look comfy but not too geeky.

I believe the correct look for backpacking is Teva or Merrell, you will not regret it for comfort or quality. My Teva's are indestructible and about 7 years old.

playftseforme · 13/04/2009 22:23

Another vote for Tevas, mine also v old, but been around the world - as good in water/on the beach as trekking. Got a basic grey colour, but admittedly not that stylish (agree with falcon, comfort over style very time when it comes to trekking)

I've had a pair of Ecco sandals for about 4yrs and they are still in fantastic condition and still super comfortable. I live in them at work all summer.
