What do you wear to a French wedding?

I'm going to one in Marseille at the end of August. It is for quite a religious family, so need to be relatively covered up (so no bustiers and thigh high splits). Are they very formal or not?

I would say less formal than in the UK.

Hats are pretty rare.

I regularly see men (under the age of 40) in stylish black jeans and shirt and jacket, rather than a suit.

But it depends how 'bourgeois' the family is.

Are bustiers and thigh high splits common at UK weddings?

French weddings go on for ages so whatever it is make sure it is comfortable.

Usually dancing until 4 or 5 am.

Thanks for the advice.

They're not common, but I was giving it as an example of what NOT to suggest.

Definitely agree with Othersideofthechannel with them being less formal. I would say the dress code is smart casual - men don't need ties and women don't need hats!

how about floral sundress or teadress? Or maybe a maxi if you wanted to go a bit more boho?

peasandbeans · 07/04/2009 17:50

I would say it depends on the family: having been to quite a few smart french weddings I would say that hats are not a must, but lots of people do wear them and get quite dressed up too.
and dancing till 4am definitely "de rigeur".

I've been to one French wedding and it was such a hoot. We had all sort of accessories - such as flying balloons, streamers etc. It was not conservative at all.

but for men a suit and tie is nearly always fine, unless stated otherwise...

MIL in her 60s usually wears a pretty summery dress with a chic cardi (rather than jacket).

Last year lots of women were wearing tunics. I think they are still in [must get round the shops more often emoticon]

TBH I don't know much about style and beauty but I have been to a fair few French weddings.

I like the family entertainments between courses. Sometimes they are almost as good as British speeches.
