Should I cut my DS hair?

I am feeling very tempted to try this as he needs a haircut and as he is only 2 1/2 I felt £6 was quite expensive last time seeing as he only sat still for 5 mins!
Should I or Shouldn't I?

Yes, but get a book and proper scissors!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 29/03/2009 20:54

I use clippers on my ds!

QueenFee · 29/03/2009 20:54

How long can you cut it with clippers?

You tube is a good place to watch a mini lesson.

I was watching it for knitting the other day.

I cut my ds's, he is 9

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 29/03/2009 21:04

I think the longest on ours is 18mm.

It suits us just fine as he's not a lover of having his hair washed so the shorter the better!!

QueenFee · 29/03/2009 21:25

DS hair is currently about 5cm so that might feel a bit drastic!
Will have a look on you tube. I mean I can't tell at school which kids have been DIY and which not so...

i cut ds and dh hair, get proper scissors and some very engrossing telly / dvd. i do a sort of wedge / bowl thing for ds who has fine straight blond hair. dh gets a very layered chop.

i can also do clippers but for dogs.

I use clippers on DS1 (9) and DS2(7) with a comb attachment so that I can adjust the length.

Stand at back of child and clipper against the lie of the hair all over with say 24 mm. Then shave upwards on back and sides on say 20mm setting.

Trim round ears and back with scissors to get straight. Shave the nape of neck with a sopa and razor.

Work fine looks smart and takes 10 minutes. Less stress and money than a hairdresser.

Try and get ceramic bladed clipper. Lots of shops have them like Boots.

ohhhh don't do it yourself....

Take him to get it cut.

I've been thinking the same, round here it starts at £8 for a childs haircut and i have 2 boys. Have a mobile hairdresser that does them for £5 each but thats if she does my hair too for £25 and i can't afford to get mine done very often. Mine never get a brilliant haircut as they never sit still, they have longer hair than boys usually have so i'm going to have a go at trimming it myself.....

I cut my ds' hair, he is 2 next month. I've done it about 3 times. Twice fine, good even, this last time he suddenly whipped his head round unexpectedly and I lopped a bit too much off a small side section . No one has pointed and laughed/ said anything so I don't think it's actually that bad. Won't put me off! He finds the hairdresser really stressful and the last cut he got there was pretty rubbish because he still moves so much.

It's quite therapeutic really

Maveta · 30/03/2009 13:22

this might help

DH does DS1s which I think always looks pretty good. Me, DH and MIL did DS2s last time, it was a 3 person job and a packet of smarties! DS2 has pretty fine hair but it stood up well to us all hacking it. I would go for it just be careful round the sides and back. If you do a bad job it will always grow and next time take him to a hairdressers.
