how much would you spend on a dress?

I saw a dress that i loved (and then tried on and it was £300. I don't think I have ever spent that much on an item of clothing. The most I have spent on a coat or jacket is probably £80.

But it is lovely. I can't find a link to it. It is a day dress, but not for weddings, but i could wear it to be a godmother, to a special dinner i am going to, and er not sure when else

its knee length, 3/4 length sleeve, empire line, in a fab rich jersey fabric, cream, with black and red bits on it. sounds odd but fits and hangs well

but is it silly money?

All relative really.

I wouldn't spend that much on a dress I only might wear for a couple of times. It is food for us all for two weeks.

LetThemEatCake · 28/03/2009 19:44

nope. Buy it.

The occasional splurge on something you love is totally justifiable and not silly at all. Think of the fact that over the course of the year you probably buy about 10 things for about £30 a pop that you are only so-so about.

If you want to put it another way, just ditch your daily latte/ panini whatever. You can always find money for gorgeous things by ditching the mundane stuff.

Enjoy!!

Buy it, it sounds like it's simple enough to be downgraded to posh daywear after a fair few fancy occasions

tis all about cost per wear for me - I have stupid amounts of cocktaila and floor length dresses which I've only worn once or twice whereas I have an 80 quid jersey dress I've worn dozens of times

VinoEsmeralda · 28/03/2009 19:46

Its only silly if you dont have it spare!

It will give you a fantastic feeling everytime you look at it/wear it!

shinyshoes · 28/03/2009 19:47

exactly, if you can get lots of wear out of it then why not.

I'd go for it

VinegarTitsTheVirginNun · 28/03/2009 19:47

Can you afford? is it a classic style that wont age so you can wear it again and again?

I wouldnt spend that much on a dress, especially one that might be out of fashion next year, but each to their own, if you can afford it, get it

newgirl · 28/03/2009 19:49

nabs - its food for us for 2-3 weeks too!

i think i could wear it a lot and i can honestly say ive never had a dress that i could wear often - i have had dresses that i would wear to a wedding but not in the day. one or two black evening dresses in the sales that i spent no more than 50 quid but not sure they looked that great.

im coming round to it..!

agree on the cost per wear thing - how many times do we spend £££££ on a dress for "a wedding' or "a ball" and then baulk at the thought of designer jeans/ expensive ballet pumps etc

It does sound like it could be worn for several occasions, nice lunches etc

pssss - a few times when I have bought something expensive and fabulous, I have fabricated events so as to have excuse to wear them! So host a posh lunch. Or several. Or go to the races.

Nabster · 28/03/2009 19:50

You didn't say you would wear it a lot in the OP which is why I wasn't saying go for it. If it is something you could wear a lot, and can easily afford it, go ahead.

I bought a fab dress last week I will wear a lot when the weather is warmer. |Cost me £30!

newgirl · 29/03/2009 09:38

ive now dreamt about the dress - i think it can now not live up to my memory of it. I am going to see if the shop is open on sundays
