Anyone had their teeth whitened? Care to tell me about it?

Cost/pain/hassle etc?
Was it worth it?

I have had Zoom whitening. I cost £95 but I think that was a special offer and it usually costs nearer £200.

There was no pain but is was a little uncomfortable having to just lie there with this big thing in my mouth under a special lamp thing for ages. More boring than anything and I am not great at sitting still.

It gave a good result though so I was happy and would probably do it again if need be.

I've had it done very cheaply and two years on my teeth are horrid, really stained and slightly rough on the surface (smoking and coffee probably don't help)

I'm thinking about getting it done again but a uv type treatment.

I really fancy this

BitOfFun · 28/03/2009 17:52

If you search carbamide peroxide on eBay and go for the 35% version, it is really effective. I might do a couple of sessions this week to prepare for my big night out on Thursday

I've used home kits like this a couple of times, and I think they're really effective.

Me too BoF, I've bought one of those pen thingys today.

Did you get to the post office?

BitOfFun · 28/03/2009 18:09

I did indeed!

OP, that is me showing you my pearly whites!

Quattrocento · 28/03/2009 18:18

It cost a fortune and hurt like stink

JulesJules · 28/03/2009 18:19

Well I haven't tried them, but these get good reviews and it does seem a lot cheaper than going to get it done professionally. And you can get them on Amazon! (Not showing my teeth!)

Bellebelle · 28/03/2009 18:30

Got it done about 5 yrs ago with moulds made to fit my teeth and wore them at night with the gel in them for about 2 wks. Really good result which has lasted. Was about £400 but think prices have come down. Will do again using the custom made moulds and solution from Internet. Worry about long term effects though - will my teeth eventually go transparent or something?!

Nontoxic · 28/03/2009 18:41

Bof (hijacking), does your method involve trays? And does it hurt subsequently? How many treatments do you need before seeing a result?

Eyeballsinthesky · 28/03/2009 18:54

I really want this done but my dentist charges £500. Is that a rip off or do they really do it properly at a dentist? IYSWIM

BitOfFun · 28/03/2009 19:12

Nontoxic- you notice after two or three 15 min sessions. You basically hold a gumsheild in your mouth with a bit of gel in it, and the kit I got this week has a little light that you clamp in yer gob too to accelerate it. Costs about 20 quid, lasts about 6 months IME.

EldonAve · 28/03/2009 19:18

Bellebelle - can you swallow the gel by mistake? does it stop you sleeping soundly

I have used the crest whitestrips and the result is very very good. Would definately recommend.

Waxaway (for the ears) has carbamide peroxide in the right concentrations and is ultra cheap, safe and great for whitening teeth. Can't remember the website but there is a study somewhere that said concentrations above a certain percentage have exactly the same effect as lesser concentrations but you get less sensitivity etc. Also after a certain amount of time (think it was 15 mins but I could be wrong) the carbamide becomes ineffective as it reacts with oxygen for only a certain amount of time.

Be careful of some ebay products. I once bought some off ebay and it had no list of ingredients and no indication of the percentage of carbamide peroxide so I didn't use it as anything could have been in it.

Will see if I can find the link.
