a shoe challenge

after a "state of our relationship" discussion with DH last night, apparently I'm "not making enough effort" to wear shoes which are even vaguely fashionable/attractive, so I have been instructed to get some new shoes. .
Anyway, my difficulty is that I have horrid feet, so not very much actually fits. I have bunions on both feet, so need to go up a size in order to get the right width, but that means my heels slop about. i can't have anything "low cut" or which cuts across the big toe joint. Similarly I can't have anything with much of a heel, as that puts pressure on the joint as well.
So, what I'm looking for is 1 pair of shoes I can wear to walk to school (mostly pavements, but some muddy bits)/general day time wear, with jeans/trousers, but which might also look OK with a skirt. I need to be able to wear socks (with the trousers) as it's too cold at the moment for bare feet (IMO), plus I get blisters easily. They need to be leather, and (preferably) black. I might have an unlimited budget (but that was probably DH attempting to sound reasonable, as he has NO IDEA how horrendously difficult getting shoes for me actually is), and he's agreed to sort out as much child care as is needed to let me shop for these shoes.
So, help please, what is fashionable, comfortable and might fit? (oh I have cankles as well, so ankle straps are out too).

Don't get black shoes! They are a bit dull I think. I quite like Fly London shoes for school run etc. You can get them at office an on Amazon. And other places too!

If budget is unlimited I would get a pair of nice but flat shoes for walking to school and some with a low heel for when you are not walking a long way.

If you have bunions, I would suggest to your DP that finding "attractive" footwear ought not to be your first priority: the health of your feet is more important, IMO, than whether you conform to some misguided standard of beauty.

However, if you want to find some nice, yet comfortable shoes, I suggest you try Ecco or Sundaes. These companies make funky, yet comfortable (and healthy) footwear.

I think you'd struggle to find "sexy" footwear that won't make your feet worse, which, again IMO, is not a good idea. You have to walk on your feet til your final day - you should treat them well!!

HTH!!

What about Clarks here

ShrinkingViolet · 21/03/2009 09:48

totally agree Penthesileia, I'm trying to prove a point to him, but if I get some nice shoes out of it, all to the good . He genuinely doesn't see that for me comfort has to come first (admittedly wearing Crocs to Ascot last year might have been the last straw for him, although in my defence, it was cold, raining, and we didn't have inside tickets, so spent the day walking around the muddy field with umbrellas and cagoules, and the Crocs were the hole-less ones, so not immediately recognisable as Crocs ).
Anyway, thanks for the links so far, I shall venture to Bluewater with a list.

what styles are actually fashionable at the moment then (stylewise I'm still stuck in late 80s/early 90s clumpy boots, and have No Idea any more )

Gladiator sandals are still "in". Could you wear these? I know you say you have cankles but you might find the straps are long enough and because these sandals have lots of straps going across the front of the foot they'll conceal any bunions but shouldn't put pressure on your toe joints.

What about these pumps? Comfy for the school run, lots of colours and a bargain as they're all under £20.00. Or these?

I know you don't want high heels but what about a platform wedge? Something like this but maybe not quite as high. I lived in similar pairs to this in various colours last Summer with long wide legged linen trousers. I found I could walk for miles in them without a problem.

To be honest I think you'll struggle to find sexy shoes that you can also do the school run in. You're asking an awful lot from one pair of shoes and perhaps it would be better to think about where you'll be going in the next few months then buy a few pairs so you have something different to wear each time.

Also, if you don't mind me saying, your husband is a lucky man if the state of your footwear is something that springs to mind when having a relationship heart to heart. My DP could and would think of a thousand things to moan about me before even considering my shoes!

MrsMattie · 21/03/2009 13:19

Am I the only one in shock that your DH has raised the 'issue' of your footwear in a serious, 'state of our relationship' conversation? Jesus. Does he wear nice shoes, then?

twinsetandpearls · 21/03/2009 13:20

No MrsMattie I am in shock as well and I love shoes.

ShrinkingViolet · 21/03/2009 13:30

my shoes were simply the opening salvo I'm afraid, the rest was wide ranging incorporating my inability to clear the crap out of our bedroom, and spending too much time organising the DDs. I'm making an effort to appear to be taking him seriously, so that I can point out the ridiculousness of his moaning, while taking full advantage of my "permission" to spend a lot of money .
And no, his shoes are not anything to write home about. Not to worry though, I'm going to come out on top of this particular "discussion" LOL.
Thanks for all the shoe suggestions - some I know aren't going to fit, but I do like the wedge sandals - can I really wear those with jeans [pathetic style-free emoticon]?

Yes you can wear wedges with jeans. Go for dark denim almost floor skimming boot cut or wide leg. Again, keep them long.

macherie · 21/03/2009 20:42

I got these last week, and they are definately the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. he rubber sole makes me feel I could run a marathon in them.

laurenslovelymummy · 21/03/2009 21:02

If you fancy a pair of wedges, try hush puppies! I have a silver pair of these and love them. They are so comfortable and fit my big wide feet really well. I wore them yesterday on a 3 hour shopping trip and I swear they did not hurt one bit

laurenslovelymummy · 21/03/2009 21:03

hmm that link doesn't work - search for hush puppies cecilia
