At what point would you give up on hand me downs ?

I have had enough for my children now at 4, 6 and 8.
I'd like to buy them the colours, shapes and styles that suit them.
And I'm loosing the will to box them up and store them every season.
Obviously school uniform is still going to be passed down, would I be a lazy mare to just buy them fewer outfits new each year and then chuck em ? (by that I mean charity shops of course).

I found the supply dried up at about age 5. DD1 (now 6.5) still gets a few things from one friend, but most of her stuff is now new. Or charity shop. But I choose it myself - with her input.

DD2 age 3.5 has just been given several boxfuls though, so she will have to stick with someone else's taste for the next 12 months or so.

Oh I meant going from the 8 to the 6 year old and the 6 year old down to the 4 year old not from other people.

that you've been able to pass school uniform down. Only thing that was still wearable of DS1's was the trousers he had in reception - I was very happy as DS2 started reception in September.........tried the trousers on him and they were 2 inches too short

DD3's reception uniform would be good for another child too it's immaculate, I guess that's girls though

I agree, it seems to come to a natural end. I rarely get anything for dd1 (very tall 9), dd2 won't wear most of dd1s handed down stuff any more, either. (She is a floaty party dress girl, dd1 dresses like 13 yr old boy).

I still get things fr ds (3), but am more selective about what I take, as it would be better going to a charitly shop than constantly being pushed to the back if a drawer here.

I see you are talking handed down within the family.....there will come a time when they just don't want the same stuff any more. As I said, I have reached that point with my dds already. DD1 only wears trousers to school. DD2 won't wear them at all.

Smithagain · 20/03/2009 19:19

Duh! I see what you mean now. I can't pass much down from DD1 to DD2 anyway, as they are completely different builds. I'd say about 10% max of DD2's wardrobe came from DD1.

So you have my official permission to buy whatever you like!

I keep less for my kids as they get older - they are 7, 4 and 2. the younger 2 pretty much wear the same size clothes now - and am sure they'll get a bit fussier as they get older. they don't have many clothes to begin with though - just don't have the space

Why not keep just special items to hand down and basics like pjs, vests if they are still usable and your children are all the same sex. Many people must give up on hand me downs once they have one child of each variety (assuming they have only two of course).

Agreed with SIL that she would only keep particular things for my DD because otherwise the styles will be so different with a 5 year plus gap and then there's the storage.....
