Facial oil

Can anyone recommend a good facial oil for using at night? Is the Clarins one all it's cracked up to be? I've been using a bit of bio oil to give myself facial massages and have noticed a real improvement in my skin, but I can't stand the soapy smell of bio oil

This really works and is sooo cheap.

decleor neroli is great

tattycoram · 20/03/2009 16:43

Yes yes - oil cleansing. I've jumped on the bandwagon and it really is amazing

twoluvlykids · 20/03/2009 16:46

Ooh I keep meaning to try that oil method, it just seems so weird to slap oil onto my naturally greasy still spotty old viz.

And Pruners is dead right, The Body Shop is just pants nowadays.

largeginandtonic · 20/03/2009 16:47

Oooh not tried that.

I have the Clarins one, it smells divine.

When i was younger i used a Body Shop carrot oil. It was fantastic and cheap too.

Grammaticus · 20/03/2009 17:02

I'm doing the olive oil thing, too. 3 days in (I do it every night) my skin is smooth and soft. I'm waiting to see how it improves my pore and blackhead issues

All I can say is, so far, my skin seems just as clean as with Dermalogica, if I stick with this I'll save a bloody fortune.

Might try a mud mask once a week, maybe. And maybe add some castor oil, haven't done that yet.

Babbity · 20/03/2009 17:08

I have the Clarins one with Sandalwood - I love it and it has made a huge difference to my skin.

Bucharest · 20/03/2009 17:15

The decleor ones are good, but the reflexologist I saw says they're still just bog standard pressed oils with a drop or 2 of the essential oil in, so you could makeyour own for a fraction of the price.

I slop a bit of olive oil on my face every so often.

motherinferior · 20/03/2009 17:17

OK, so which kind of oils and what d'you add to them, for cleansing?

JohnnyTwoHats · 20/03/2009 17:18

I have been using Bio oil to do this as I have some already, and I too have noticed a big difference. Also switched to mineral makeup, yet to see the benefit because its first day of wearing it today!

Grammaticus · 20/03/2009 17:20

Just olive oil so far, though the website (link below) says to add castor oil too. Counter-intuitively, my skin no longer gets greasy/shiny by early evening.

I used to use neal's yard rosehip seed oil which is the same as that rosa mosqueta (I thnk Bio Oil contains some of that too doesn't it?). it was good, but I think a wee bit pricey, for just oil. Olive oil probably the way to go.

motherinferior · 20/03/2009 17:29

I can't help feeling that I'm back to my quite recent days of using only very back-to-basics products. I have been sloshing olive oil (with a bit of lavender in it) on the rest of my skin, though, it's fab.

motherinferior · 20/03/2009 17:30

organic castor here

motherinferior · 20/03/2009 17:31

The Origins one looks rather lovely online...

WowOoo · 20/03/2009 17:34

Use either wheatgerm if skin very dry or almond or nothing. All Neal's Yard. £6 a bottle that last me ages, so not as cost effective as some, but not too bad compared with fancy stuff.

My skin still looks like s*!t though!
Must drink more water......, sleep 8 hours....?, stay away from sun....i wish!

No. no, no more recommendations for lusciously packaged Decleor/Origins type stuff, I beg you, ladies! I have a weakness for overpriced, gimmicky beauty products .

I am trying this cheap as chips oil method. Will report back.

Pruners - let me assure you that essential oils are not a scam. Not only have they been used for centuries, there are many research papers which now support the efficacy of essential oils to treat many conditions, including excellent anti-bacterial properties (no man-made substance beats lemon oil in this respect) and even the ability to supress epileptic fits (Ylang Ylang).

They are highly concentrated which is why you only need a small amount for them to have an effect.

They can be expensive where the plant used is either rare or expensive to cultivate. For example, it takes 200 rose heads to make 1 drop of Rose Otto essential oil - which is why a good rose oil (usually Bulgarian) will cost in the region of £35 - £45 for 5mls. Chamomile (both roman and German) is moderately expensive (approx £12 per 10ml) Citrus oils are much cheaper and oils like Lavender, eucalyptus and tea tree are mid-priced (eg £7 - 8 per 10ml).

If any of you are interested in buying good quality base and essential oils, I would recommend Neals Yard from the High Street or Essentially Oils which is very popular with aromatherapists. Never buy oils which don't have the botanical name (latin name) also printed on the label. "Lavender" for example can mean any one of many species - not all of which are safe depending on condition (including pregnancy).

Grammaticus · 20/03/2009 21:16

Do we need essential oils for cleaning our faces? And, if we do, which ones?

spikemomma · 20/03/2009 21:26

Third day on using oil and i can't stop touching my face. It feels so much softer, i can't believe it. I've got sensitive skin on my face and nothing seemed to work in stopping the dryness. Until now. I'm so pleased.

I bought some castor oil, finally found in a local independant chemist, only £1.30. Had a bit of bio oil left over, so have alternated the both of them. It has stopped the dryness and made it feel lovely. I do put aveeno cream on afterwards too. That's the only cream that seemed to stop my skin feeling dry since having kids. I don't think i'm cut out for these expensive creams, i wouldn't know where to begin, but i'm hoping this is my saviour! Hope it carrys on like this.
