I envy those of you with girls

It must be so much cheaper to buy their clothes. You only have to buy summery things like skirts, shorts, cropped trousers and then hey presto add a pair of tights underneath and you have your winter clothes sorted too!!!

Now I put DS in tights under trousers when it is cold and will probably continue to do so until he asks me not too, presumably sometime in infant school - my friend's 5 year old in year 1 asked to stop wearing them a few weeks after they went back last september. Unfortunately I don't think I can get away with him wearing tights and shorts!!

my 7 yr old dd hates tights, I have tried every brand I can, they all fall down on her.

nappyaddict · 20/03/2009 13:11

What about leggings?

Me too but not for the same reasons as you nappyaddict!

I am just jealous of the range of colours, patterns and styles that girls have to chose from. Boys have shorts, trousers t shirts and jumpers - most of them seem to be stripey or have some awful slogan on the front!

DSM · 20/03/2009 13:16

Do you really put your DS in tights under his trousers? How cold is it where you live?

psychomum5 · 20/03/2009 13:18

well, you would think it could be that easy, but sometimes it really can;t.

they grow, and so what fits them in summer won;t in the winter.

plus, what does still fit, won;t when teamed with long sleeved top under plus vest.

and yes a cardie can go over, but that is only ok when autumn really. in winter, a cardie over a summer dress is still too cold.

and as for tight. they ladder or snag or bobble or just go into holes, so as much as they might sound like a cheaper option, when you have gone thru 5prs in one week, it really gets pricey (and irritating too!).

that said, very tops are handy to supplement a winter wardrobe.

mind you. I have two boys along with my three girls, and the boys summer stuff lasts them longer as they don;t seem to feel the cold as much!!

psychomum5 · 20/03/2009 13:19

vest tops, not very

stickybeaker · 20/03/2009 13:21

The one fashion I'm really keen on is layers. I bought some long sleeved white vests and hey presto DDs Summer T-shirts and tunics got another outing this winter. There's no reason this couldn't be done with boys though.

nappyaddict · 20/03/2009 13:22

DSM - in the winter I do yes.

MrsMattie · 20/03/2009 13:24

Urrr, everything is pink or lilac for girls!

DSM · 20/03/2009 13:24

Really? Is it terribly cold where you live?

Maybe my DS does too much running around to feel the cold, but even at minus temperatures, he is fine in trousers and socks (and jumper, coat etc, obviously )

giantkatestacks · 20/03/2009 13:26

agree - I have never put my ds in tights either - imagine the faffing when it comes to going to the toilet...good grief...he would never get them off in time.

muffle · 20/03/2009 13:27

I love having a boy but I would love to have a girl too for very shallow reasons - like organised I would like to go girly clothes shopping. I'd also love to make pretty smocks and dresses - can't really sew for DS as making trousers and t-shirts is more trouble than it's worth.

nappyaddict · 20/03/2009 13:30

I always think it's a bit bizarre how we layer our top half up and not our bottom half. I know when it was very cold last month I noticed my top half felt very cosy and warm but my legs were always freezing with just jeans on.

Hmm, girls are VERY bloody minded though when it comes to clothing. DS1 & 2 didn't really give 2 hoots about what they wore until they were about 10 or 11.

DD is 6 and has been stubbornly sure of what she likes and doesn't like fashion-wise since she was about 4. Just because you have a girl doesn't mean that you get to live out your Barbie/Tiny Tears fantasies on her !

nappyaddict · 20/03/2009 13:31

DS isn't potty trained yet but my friend's DS never had a problem with tights the same as none of the 2 year old girls at DS' preschool do.

I do that thing with tops stickybeaker - DS gets to wear his fave t-shirts all winter, on top of a plainer long-sleeved top.

There is far too much pink and lilac for girls, but also some lovely other things if you look around. I have swooned over really funky dresses in Zara, H&M and John Lewis. Was in JL yesterday with a friend, my DS and her DD - I saw a fab stripy tunic dress (but her DD wasn't keen - you see I need my own girl so I can impose my will - at least for a couple of years!)

duckyfuzz · 20/03/2009 13:33

I'm glad I have girls too, but not for the clothing - in fact that is the main point of contention with mine and they're only 5! I think boys clothes are far nicer and less stereotypical

giantkatestacks · 20/03/2009 13:34

nappyaddict - I think my ds has a tendancy to leave things til the very last minute and cant hold it in at all - I think lots of boys are the same.

And he'd have to pull the tights all the way down to the floor to stand with his legs far enough apart I reckon whereas girls can just sit down - I think he would struggle...or fall over - whichever I'd end up with wee all over the bathroom. Again.

Fimbo · 20/03/2009 13:38

It's a nightmare having a girl, honest . At least with boys they don't care what they wear. (I have one of each btw!).

My dd is coming up for 11 and will only wear certain things. She loves New Look, whilst I think 99% of the things in there are cheap, tacky and nasty (with the exception of the £10 Hula jeans for me). I long for the days of ditzy dresses and stripey tights a la Boden, but the reality is she has never been like that and never will.

Mini emo anyone?

nappyaddict · 20/03/2009 13:38

Oh well DS still sits on the toilet so haven't got the standing problem here. My friend's DS just pulled them down as far as he pulled his trousers down though.

Organised don't you like stripes then?
