Bought a Vitalumiere chanel foundation the other day after rave reviews here on MN. I went into the store with a bare face and asked them to help me pick the right shade. The lovely chanel girl chose what we both thought was the correct shade and applied it all over my face. In John Lewis it looked fine and I happily parted with my cash. Then I got home and discovered it was sliggghhhhtly too 'tan' and made my face look a bit flat. I took it off and put on my old foundation (bobbi brown) and it was indeed slightly paler but much more natural. I loved the way the vitalumiere went on though, I just want a lighter shade. Will they take it back? I've not used any from the actual bottle but I'm too shy to go back in case they refuse to exchange it

des the bottle have a seal on it?
if not they might say no cos you wouldn't be able to prove you hadn't used any.

but it's def worth a try in any case. i[d give it a go. just explain wht happened and see what they say

i was in john lewis tonight and someone changed guerlain foundation for just that reason (i was trying on 10000 lipsticks) and she didn't have any trouble.

theyoungvisiter · 19/03/2009 21:06

If it's sealed then I'm sure they will exchange it - John Lewis are usually brilliant about that kind of thing.

If you've broken the seal then there's probably some health and safety rule about not exchanging it.

sorry to hijack - but is that true wats? Dh bought me some No7 eye cream because I use the Protect and Perfect and he assumed it would be ok. Made the skin under my eyes raw and sore though! Can I take back? even without a receipt?

on the subject of the thread - I think it's a bit slack that the true shade wasn't selected. That's the fault of the girl at the counter isn't it? We trust them to advise us and get it right

MN should earn commission on Channel stuff. I also went bare faced to Chanel counter and have a lovely make over and bought way too much stuff. Blamed it on MN to DH

theyoungvisiter · 19/03/2009 21:12

what do you mean will they believe you? If it's sealed surely there's nothing not to believe - you just say "I would like to exchange this unused product" - end of.

Not sure about Mutt's point though - after all the storegirl did agree the shade in consultation with you and it's a matter of personal taste to some extent, I don't think you can say it was the "wrong" one, like being fitted with the wrong pair of shoes. If you liked the shade she showed you at the time then she had no way of knowing it wasn't your usual shade.

But that shouldn't impact on your right to return an unused product for exchange, that's normally fine. You don't need a sob story.

itchyandscratchy · 19/03/2009 21:13

I'm still fine with the serum, although the night cream made me a bit spotty Can I swap that too? Dh bought it at same time as eye cream.

Was talking to a friend who works on the Lancome counter and she said all the No7 stuff makes her react badly as she's quite sensitive. The Lancome stuff is less chemical-based (apparently, but she would say that I spose, being emplyed by them!)

bobbyswish · 19/03/2009 21:13

ok. Just feels like I'm questioning her judgement (cringe) but I definitely looked better when i'd taken it OFF which can't be a good thing...

what colour is it - claire (sp?) is the lighest colour and it's too dark for me most of the year

theyoungvisiter · 19/03/2009 21:15

chances are it won't be the same person at teh counter - even if it is I really doubt she will remember you! Just select the shade you DO want and say "I bought the wrong shade the other day and would like to exchange it."

Seriously - you are overthinking this!

Just to add I bought a bottle of eye make-up remover and took it home and it stung my eyes a little. At £15 I was definitely not going to bin it so I took it back to Estee Lauder and exchanged for a more gentle one. It was no trouble at all, they even gave me more free samples.

brimfull · 19/03/2009 23:51

I got a sample of this and I actually prefer it too my vitalumiere. It is much lighter.

Astonella · 04/04/2009 20:40

wink

If you chose the shade in consultation with the saleswoman, have opened the product and used it it would seem rather unreasonable and unhygienic to expect to return it. You may have to chalk it up to trial and error.
However, if the product is unused and the packaging intact there should be no problem in exchanging the item for another. Good Luck!
